Couhins - Pessac-Léognan 2022

The estate

Cru Classé de Graves owned by the "INRA" (National Institute of Agronomic Research) since 1968, Château Couhins participates in the writing of tomorrow's viticulture, rich in all its societal and environmental stakes, but also benefits, in preview, from the latest sustainable and precision viticultural techniques. Contributing to the building of knowledge, putting this knowledge to the test in practice, both in the vineyard and in the cellars, and then passing it on to the professionals in the wine industry, these are the missions that bring the Château team together.

Since the 2020 vintage the estate is officially in conversion to Organic Farming.

Compared to the powerful intensity of the vintage of 2021, I am more captivated by the gentle charm of the vintage of 2022. Thanks to its lower pH, the refreshing nature of this wine outclasses many dry whites, as if savoring a chilled spring water teeming with grapefruit peel, Sichuan pepper, and white pepper. The salinity gifted by the limestone clay soil lends an elegance and tension to the palate; its jelly-like texture allows for an appreciation of sheer purity and gentleness. Without question, it stands among the finest white wines of Bordeaux in this vintage.

An excellent wine, well made, carefully constructed, plenty of tannic grip and lift, but there is a clear flash of heat that takes away from the berry fruit, given balance by slate and crayon tannins.

Confirming my en primeur expectations, the 2022 Couhins-Lurton wafts from the glass with aromas of peony, lilac, cherries and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textured, it's elegant and fresh with good depth at the core and powdery tannins, concluding with a long, delicate finish. This is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coming from a cooler clay and limestone terroir, the 2022 Château Couhins checks in as 54% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, all aged 16 months in one-third new barrels, with the balance in once- and twice-used barrels. Its deeper purple hue is followed by a solid nose of cassis and black cherry fruits intermixed with beautiful leafy herbs, flowers, and crushed stone-like minerality. With medium to full-bodied richness, rock-solid concentration, and ripe tannins, this fresher, balanced, nicely proportioned Graves will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and shine over the following 15+

The 2022 Couhins-Lurton has a lifted, expressive nose with blackberry, wild hedgerow and light leathery aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced and quite classic in style, with fine tannins and a nice, edgy finish. It has good potential.

Immediately fruity this year but still quite attractive and pretty complex with subtle minerals looming from the spiced cherry and plum flavors. A touch of flower and cocoa powder as well. Juicy and generous, this has fine, chalky tannins and a plump, succulent finish. 54% merlot, 38% cabernet sauvignon, 5% petit verdot and 3% cabernet franc. Already appealing, but can hold.

Sharp and tangy, though bright and clean with toasted elements that detracts a little from the fruit. A sense of fun and fruitiness though, clean and sharp, layered with creamy and mineral touches that give nuance and spark. Still a little charged, but there's good potential here, nicely fragrant and detailed, feels finessed but still packing a punch in terms of fruit density, forward motion and precision. 3.45pH. Harvest 8 September-6 October. Yield of 36hl/ha. Ageing for 12 months French oak, 50% new.

The aroma of Château Couhins 2022 is particularly unique, as the swirling of the glass releases a burst of fragrance that blends tea stems, sour jujube, and black plum. After a brief wait, the aroma of moss and dried orange peel gradually emerges. The amount of tannins is even greater than in previous years, but the texture is extremely delicate. The clever extension of the salty taste at the finish enriches the layers of flavor on the palate and creates more space for imagination.

The 2022 Couhins-Lurton has an airy, floral and elegant bouquet showing blackberry and raspberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and sorbet-fresh, with saturated tannins, plenty of juicy red fruit and spice traces toward the harmonious finish. This will be delicious once in bottle.

Intense varietal character, with juicy green apple and citrus, excellent lift and grip through the palate, touch of candyfloss sweetness reflects the vintage, but this is impressive and mouthwatering. Ageing is split between 14% new oak, 57% one and two year barrels and 29% in wooden and stainless steel vats. Stéphane Derenoncourt consultant since 2017.

Nez intense de cassis et de réglisse, notes fumées, florales, belle bouche mûre et savoureuse, tannins gras et belle vivacité en finale. Généreux, charmeur, il plaira à tous.

The 2022 Château Couhins is incredibly impressive. Based on 54% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, it has a darker, concentrated, focused style that's going to benefit from bottle age. Giving up lots of both red and black fruits, as well as some floral and violet hints, it has good mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

With a nose of chocolate, black cherries, figs, flowers ,and black raspberries, the wine is soft, silky, fresh and polished, with layers of sweet, ripe, but not overripe dark red fruits, spice, cocoa, and black cherries from start to finish. This should be delicious to taste on release. The wine is a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 15.3% ABV, pH 3.45. Drink from 2025-2040.

Aromas of iris, violet, peony, black pepper, lilac and menthol preface the 2022 Couhins-Lurton, a strong effort in this vintage. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textured, with a fleshy texture as well as powdery tannins, it’s a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and appears to be an address in the ascendant.

This is textured and polished with medium body and stony minerality. Fine tannins and a mineral finish. A little lean at the end.
