Cobos - Mendoza 2021

Viña Cobos makes wines that are authentic expressions of the terroir from which they come. Paul Hobbs, founding partner and winemaker at Viña Cobos, has worked since 1988 in the exploration of the different terroirs of Mendoza, looking for the most distinguished regions in Luján de Cuyo and the Valle de Uco, to produce wines that uniquely express their origins.

Sustainable farming methods in the vineyard contribute to consistent yields of healthy fruit. In the winery, careful treatment of the grapes and meticulous winemaking techniques result in complex and elegant wines of subtlety and balance.

With the inaugural vintage of Cobos Malbec in 1999, Viña Cobos marked a milestone in viticulture, defying existing standards and firmly positioned Malbec and Argentina on the international wine scene. Since then, our prestigious wines have been recognized around the globe by critics and consumers alike.

The 2021 vintage:

During 2021 season, cool conditions prevailed through the ned of harvest creating the environnement desired for slow, even berry maturation. Snowfall during the winter was much higher than the previous year. Although we are still in a context of water crisis, the availability of water was enough to supply the vineyards properly. The cool summer and the intermittent episodes of rain made the plants vegetate in good conditions and maturity occured slowly. Areas with rocky soils and good drainage achieved very good concentration and complexity.

Tasting notes:

Deep inky violet color, saturated and bright. Focused and complex aromas of gooseberries, fresh rosemary with violets hints. On the palate reveals a remarkable structure and texture, unfolding in layers and minerality. It's round and tense.

(Mendoza; 100% Malbec; 15% alcohol; tasted with Paul Hobbs in Bordeaux and then at the Joanne press tasting). Inky. Creamy. Wild and ‘sauvage’ as the French would have it. Rich, full, plump, but ethereal and incredibly elegant and lifted for a wine with such considerable density, intensity and mid-palate richness and concentration. A very floral and aromatically expressive Malbec – with lovely Szechuan and rose peppercorn notes, rose petals too and wild thyme (which is apparently naturally present in the vineyard). Squid ink. Graphite. Iodine. Crushed rocks. Cassis. Blackberry, black cherry and bramble. Chocolate. Roasted coffee bean. I love the ripples of freshness that seem to radiate upwards from the depths of the glacial mid-palate, bringing additional textural interest. Very fluid and engaging. This finishes very high in the mouth and it is incredible, given the structure of this wine, how soft and caressingly gentle those tannins are all the way to the finish. Texturally sublime and wonderfully vivid and fresh, but all in harmony. Better than the 2020.

Liqourice root and blackberry bud crowd in on the opening beats, this is muscular but extremely deft, gracefully stepping its way through the palate, blueberry and spiced raspberry fruit opening to gorgeous smoky campfire, rosemary, thyme and coffee bean, so full of character. Intensely flavoured but never too much, this is a pure shot of pleasure. A successful growing season, no heat spikes, long slow ripening, two vineyards that head up to 1,200m elevation. Ungrafted vines, own rooted, with native grasses that help keep humidity even though this is a low rainfall spot, and help absorb some of the sun's rays. Aged in 55% new Frech oak. Tasted twice.

N°61 TOP 100 JS

Absolutely packed with black fruit and enticing spices, the wine shows great intensity, depth and length. Layers of blue and black fruit, graphite, cocoa, spearmint and cassis all blend together for a sensory feast. A portion of the grapes was whole-cluster fermented before aging 18 months in 55% new French oak barrels. The Cobos is made from selected lots of grapes from different vineyards, mostly coming from Chanares and Hobbs Estate, but with a small portion of fruit from Zingaretti. A great wine to drink or hold. Best from 2030.
