Cloudburst - Cabernet Sauvignon - Margaret River 2020

Australia’s leading cult wine was created by American biologist Will Berliner, on the wild and isolated southwestern corner of Australia in a biodiversity paradise. The one-hectare vineyard was planted in 2005, and has never been cultivated nor chemically sprayed.

It is close-planted, own-rooted and non-irrigated, and has been farmed using biodynamic principles from inception. The vineyard benefits from the presence of well-drained ironstone gravel soils, and a supremely untainted natural environment within sound of the Indian Ocean.
Speaking of the Cloudburst ethos, owner and vigneron Will says “Our practice of careful observation begins in the vineyard and continues in the winery. We work with nature and offer only minimal interference in natural processes. The whole farm is an integrated, living system, with its foundation in the soil. It is an exceptionally isolated and pristine place, unmarred in anyway. The grapes have nothing standing in the way of their full expression.

The 2020 vintage

Weather conditions

A wet winter was followed by a relatively warm spring, stimulating early vine growth. The hot summer, characterized by successive heat waves and very dry conditions, accelerated ripening, and resulted in small bunch sizes with intense concentrated flavours.
Chardonnay harvest finished in advance of a series of rains in late February which persisted into March, prolonging hang time in the Cabernet and Malbec. The result was softer, riper tannins, concentrated flavours, and optimally ripened fruit.

Tasting notes

"A stunningly elegant wine of great beauty, finesse, and complexity. Structured layers of briar and biscuit with liquorice, iodine, and graphite, are held together with tantalizing tension. Cerebral, sensual, vibrant, and transparent, this wine casts a powerful spell." Will Berliner

Smells heady and gorgeously perfumed, so aromatic and expressive. Fragrant pink and red flowers and red summer berry fruits, you wouldn't necessarily pick this for a Cabernet at all with hints of dried herbs too. Pure and focussed on the palate, a lovely sleek, silky texture with the most lovely juiciness, really quite light and well framed with the delicacy of the elements showing through - subtle florality, creamy-herbal strawberries with balancing acidity and slightly firm but fine tannins give the support underneath the fruit. Round and generous, so well controlled and presented, easy to drink and enjoy today. It's not at all thick or velvety, more lean and straight than I was expecting with some sharpness but it feels like it's been sculpted with sinew lingering on the tongue followed by a menthol finish. This has absolute class about with fragrance from the 3% Malbec and elements of herbal, dried spices and a graphite, iron and liquorice tang on the finish. Absolutely moreish. From a 2ha biodynamically-farmed plot carved out of wild bushland. Winemaker Will Berliner. 3.8pH.

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, with 3% Malbec in the blend, is pale to medium garnet-purple in color. It skips out of the glass with bright, cheery notes of redcurrant jelly, black raspberries, and fresh blackcurrants, followed by hints of rose oil, dried lavender, and wild sage. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant and refreshing, with fine-grained tannins and loads of crunchy red fruit layers, finishing long and minerally.

This is Cabernet Sauvignon in the hands of Will Berliner, slimmed down to the heart of the grape, where it is finessed and full of floral character even in the hot and dry 2020 vintage. There is a sweetness to the fruits, focused more squarely on raspberry and blackberry rather than the cassis of some years, nuanced by liqourice root and black tea. Beautiful fragrant florals that stick to your mouth and nose, not typical to Australian Cab perhaps, but typical to this land, and this winemaker. Waves of flavour that hover over the palate, thoroughly enjoyable. Organic and biodynamic.
