Clos Floridène rouge - Graves 2017

Denis Dubourdieu Domaines

George, the aesthete and goldsmith of wine making, Pierre the visionary, Denis the great winegrower and reference winemaker for the whites and finally Fabrice and Jean Jacques, the worthy heirs, it is an understatement to say that the Dubourdieu family has marked the wine industry through the ages.

Today, the family owns several renowned properties, including Château Reynon, Clos Floridène, Château du Haura and Château Doisy-Daëne. Fabrice and Jean-Jacques, the new generation, honor their father's extraordinary career and keep highlighting the exceptional know-how of this family.

Le Clos Floridène, a creation of the Dubourdieu family

Clos Floridène today covers an area of 40 hectares in the Graves appellation. Its name is a tribute to Denis and Florence, both founders of the estate. Over the last three decades they have successively purchased plots located on the best terroirs. Thanks to their hard work, Clos Floridène is now an independant vineyard and an internationally reknowned winery.

The red wine of Clos Floridène is vinified in stainless steel vats, with soft extractions. Then the wine is aged for 12 months in barrels.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Clos Floridene gives up aromas of coffee, fragrant earth and dried herbs over baked black cherries, warm plums and boysenberries. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and chewy with a good core of muscular fruit and a spicy finish.

The 2017 Clos Floridene is gorgeous. Ripe red cherry, blood orange, rose petal, mint and spice all flesh out in this pretty and nuanced Graves. Sweet floral notes add an enticing upper register. Pliant and supple, the 2017 is wonderfully expressive today. Tasted two times.

This ripe, spicy wine from the Dubourdieu domaines is balanced and full of attractive berry fruits. Firm tannins and fresh acidity go together with the richness and structure of the perfumed fruit. Drink from 2022.

Bracing, featuring lemon peel and white peach flavors, laced with ample zing on the quinine-tinged finish. Moderate in scale, this is nevertheless a pure rapier of a white. Bring on the oysters. Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Drink now through 2023. 3,333 cases made. — JM

The 2017 Clos Floridène, the Graves château owned by Florence and the late Denis Dubourdieu, has a well defined bouquet with perfumed blackberry and iris aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a judicious sprinkle of black pepper on the finish. This consistent performer just goes and produces (yet another) delicious Graves that comes recommended.

Bonne intensité fruitée. Il se caractérise par une forme en bouche ciselée, axée sur l’équilibre et la fraîcheur. Très jolie finale.

The 2017 Clos Floridene is laced with the essence of dark cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and new leather. Dense and voluptuous, with quite a bit of density, Clos Floridene is one of the richer more unctuous reds of the appellation in 2017. There is no shortage of depth to this super-expressive Graves. Tasted two times.

The 2017 Clos Floridène Rouge has a well defined bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, singed leather and light cedar aromas that gain intensity in the glass whilst remaining classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, plenty of pencil lead infused black fruit with just the right amount of dryness on the finish to beckon another sip. Very fine.

Black cherry and black currant fruit glides through, with light anise and tar accents, staying graceful through the finish.—J.M.

Very ripe and lifted, black-cherry aroma. Ripe-fruited and juicy, plays more to ripeness than to charm and finishes a little bitter. But tannins are relatively silky. (JH) Julia Harding MW

Jean-Jacques Dubourdieu has done a good job with this wine. There's a little more extraction than some - a sign of confidence in his clay-red sand and gravel soils in the commune of Pujols-sur-Ciron, on the approach to Barsac. Aged in 33% new oak, this has a lift and sense of minerality through the palate, with fairly juicy blackberry markers. The acidity finishes just a little high, as I am finding in a lot of the red Graves this year, but it's a good wine with attractive weight. Medium-term.
