Clos du Clocher - Pomerol 2017

LIMITED QUANTITIES : SMALL VINEYARD OF LESS THAN 6 HA, LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE PLATEAU

The birth of a classic
In the 1920s, the Art Deco movement reinforced the pleasures of simplicity geometry. In an echo of this aesthetic, Jean-Baptiste Audy found his terroir, at the heart of the Pomerol plateau. A ‘marvellous garden’, enclosed by low walls, with the church rising in the background. Clos du Clocher was born, due to become a classic of the appellation.
Loyal to its roots
Here there is neither extravagance nor superfluous ornaments, but an independence of style that is marked and unique. The vines are loyal to the spirit in which they were planted, and to the earth that beard them. From the rare blue clay that both nourishes and withholds water when necessary, the vines show their force and their personality; profound, velvety, pure and elegant.
Moments of repose
Rigour and discretion mark the aromas of the first few years, followed by a wave of originality and a singular character. There are of course clear expressions of Merlot, the king grape of Pomerol, but also spices, mint, tobacco and the freshness and subtlety of the old Cabernet Franc vines. Timeless rather than fashionable, clos du Clocher follows its own path.

Relatively high acidity compared to 2010 and 2016 in this lineup, and the fruit is fresher, still with density and vivid cherry and cassis, alongside pomegranate and touches of redcurrant. As it softens in the glass, this turns into a delicously balanced glass of Pomerol, already open at seven years old, plenty to enjoy. Good stuff. An early harvest, 55% new oak for ageing, Cécile Dupuis technical director, Jean-Baptiste Bourotte owner.

There was no frost in the vineyard of Clos du Clocher in 2017. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc gives a deep garnet color. It skips out with vibrant notions of black raspberries, kirsch and rose oil, plus suggestions of garrigue, forest floor, and cardamom. Medium-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and lovely tension supporting the tightly knit fruit, finishing on a lingering ferrous note.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Clos du Clocher bursts from the glass with bold blueberry preserves, Christmas cake and baked plums scents plus nuances of raspberry leaves, unsmoked cigar and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals mouth-filling blackberry and spicy layers, framed by firm, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. Drinking Window : 2020 - 2034. 92+

The 2017 Clos du Clocher has turned out beautifully. Rich, ample and voluptuous in feel, the 2017 has so much to offer. Juicy dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha abound in a plush, open-knit Pomerol that has so much to offer. This is such a delicious and compelling wine.

Plenty of tar and berry character with hints of stones and fresh herbs. Medium body, bright acidity and medium-fine tannins at the end. Lovely now. Balanced red. Drink or hold.

Terrific notes of black cherries, crushed flowers, and sous bois emerge from the 2017 Château Clos Du Clocher, which is an 80/20 split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. With medium-bodied richness, good concentrated, and a seamless texture, it has outstanding potential and should be well worth seeking out.

The 2017 Clos du Clocher is inky, deep and voluptuous. Floral notes give lift to the red-toned fruit in this super-expressive, pliant Pomerol. Clos du Clocher is usually a bigger, more extracted wine, but in 2017, those qualities are reined in, and the wine is just gorgeous. A closing flourish of red and purplish berry fruit punctuates the finish.

Quite floral with black raspberry, cherry and plum notes, the wine is medium bodied, silky and soft with a good-sized jolt of verve in the finish.

The 2017 Clos du Clocher was picked 21 September to 4 October. It gently unfolds on the nose with blackberry and wild strawberry scents, a touch of iris and incense that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a little edginess coming through with aeration. It becomes spicier with black pepper and a touch of brine towards the linear finish. There is moderate length here, not a Clos du Clocher with immense flair but there is ample freshness.

The 2017 Clos du Clocher is deep purple-black in color with a beautiful nose of lilacs, star anise and dark chocolate with a core of crushed blackberries and mulberries. The palate is medium to full-bodied with firm, grainy tannins and plenty of mid-palate muscular fruit, extending into a long, spicy finish.

No frost to contend with here, giving a yield of 45hl/ha. This is displaying poised black fruits with a feeling of plump, rich damson and black cherry, with layers of dark chocolate revealing themselves through the palate. A real success, it was harvested between 25 September and 5 October, undergoing integral vinification with malolactic in barrel on 15% of the crop, and 65% new oak overall.

More fruit than many Pomerols in 2017 with a solid core of berry and chocolate character. Ripe tannins and a long, subtle finish.
