Chevalier de Lascombes - Margaux 2023

Chevalier Lascombes, second wine of Château Lascombes

The younger sibling in the Lascombes family is no junior. Selected from batches that are not earmarked for the Grand Vin, this Second Wine of Château Lascombes, 2nd Classified Growth in 1855, has undeniable charm and offers real drinking pleasure.

The 2023 vintage:

The 2023 vintage of Chevalier de Lascombes, the second wine of Château Lascombes, also marks a decisive turning point for this cuvée. First of all, this is the first vintage under the direction of Axel Heinz, who joined the team in July 2023. Drawing on his experience in taking the renowned Italian wines Orneillaia and Masseto to new heights, he is now bringing his expertise to Chevalier de Lascombes for its very first vintage.

This year is also synonymous with a change of stylistic direction for the estate. Axel Heinz wants to steer Château Lascombes and its second wine towards a more classic, timeless style, in line with consumer expectations for a second Grand Cru Classé.

These changes are also reflected in the visual identity of the wines. The labels and capsules of Château Lascombes and Chevalier de Lascombes have been changed. The aim is to create a coherent range effect, with an engraved bottle that is now identical for both wines.

Finally, the ambition for this 2023 vintage is to be one of the greatest Margaux second wines. The blend of Chevalier de Lascombes has therefore been refocused on the large plots of Cabernet Sauvignon that are the signature of this prestigious growth.

The 2023 Chevalier de Lascombes has a bright black cherry- and blueberry-scented bouquet, just a touch of violet in the background. Maybe it just misses a little bandwidth. The palate is medium-bodied with a little rigidity on the entry. Sapid, quite angular in style, it just needs to muster more flesh on the finish.

Lightly baked red cherries and sweet strawberries at first, but the slightly baked character gets blown off in the glass as you give it some time, revealing aromas of fresher red berries, hibiscus and minerals. Fruity on the palate but tense at the core, with fresh, fine-grained tannins and a juicy, tight-wound finish. Better from 2026.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Chevalier de Lascombes sashays out of the glass with playful notes of juicy plums, boysenberries, and kirsch leading to wafts of lilacs and cinnamon toast with a hint of wild sage. The medium-bodied palate offers fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness to support the bright, breezy fruit, finishing with a tangy lift. The blend is 70% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Petit Verdot.

First full year with new director Axel Heinz. This is enjoyable, showing richly textured loganberry, cassic and raspberry fruits, good lift and character, grilled oak without being dominant or intrusive.

The 2023 Chevalier de Lascombes is soft, open-knit and very easy to like. A new emphasis on freshness is evident in the wine's bright red-toned fruit, citrus and floral notes. Elegant, silky tannins add to the wine's palpable finesse. This is very nicely done. I especially admire the energy here.

Lemon blossom and citrus rind with currant and blackberry on the nose, as well as some chocolate. Medium body with a tight center-palate and creamy tannins. Fresh and salty. Vivid. Crunchy. Second wine of Lascombes.

Quite a fragrant nose, really floral and heavily scented with black berry fruit and some red cherry notes. Crisp and chalky, this has a lovely fresh bite and tang to the strawberry fruit, more red on the palate with a clear, crystalline base of powdery minerality. A touch tense in terms of focus but there’s nice softness too, expanding slowly with a long length. An encouraging second wine with some underlying power. Clean and precise. A little toasted on the finish, graphite, cedar, coffee and dark chocolate. 3.70pH. A yield of 35hl/h. First vintage under director Axel Heinz. Julien Viaud consultant.
