La Chenade - Lalande de Pomerol 2024

La Chenade, the signature of the Durantou family

The name of this estate in the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation is a tribute by Denis Durantou to his great-grandparents, who owned vines near the locality of La Chênaie.

La Chenade is a small estate occupying clay and gravel terroirs not far from Château Les Cruzelles, another of its many productions. The Durantou family also owns Châteaux le Chenade, l'Eglise-Clinet and Montlandrie.

In these small gardens, worked with passion and patience, the cultivation choices allow moderate yields to produce and vinify fine harvests. Denis Durantou passed away in 2020 and was one of the greatest winemakers of the right bank. His daughters are proudly taking over the estate and honoring this heritage.

Vintage 2024:

“In 2024, although the vines were slowed down by continuous rainfall and insufficient sunshine despite summer heat, we were nevertheless able to vinify a vintage with the mathematical elegance and luminous precision of a French formal garden.”
— Noëmie Durantou, Estate Director & Winemaker

Tasting Notes:

“Vintage 2024 offers a myriad of aromas and flavors. From the red fruits and fern of Saintayme to the medlar and acacia of La Chenade, we journey toward the vetiver and creamy mouthfeel of Les Cruzelles. The peppery, apricot-toned Montlandrie gives way to the velvety rhubarb and cherry of La Petite Église. The apotheosis belongs to L’Église Clinet, bathed in notes of orgeat syrup, vanilla, and truffle.”
— Marie Reilhac Durantou, Co-Manager

The Chenade is characterized by reduction, which allows it to unfold gradually. The influence of Cabernet Franc on the cuvée, with notes of peony, is impressive, especially in the context of 15% of the cuvée. The sandy-gravelly soils impart freshness and finesse both olfactory and palate. The wine is supported by compact, slightly taut tannins and a juicy structure. A tasty wine with a refreshing and long-lasting finish. 2028-2042

Redcurrant, blueberry and white pepper, with gentle earthy notes. Less 'Pomerol-adjacent' than in some vintages, but this has charm, and a sense of precision and lift, 35hl/h yield after hail. No chaptilisation, harvest September 22 to 28, 57% new oak

Deep garnet-purple colored. Notes of fresh black and red plums and wild strawberries spill from the glass, followed by hints of damp soil and black pepper. The light to medium-bodied palate is soft with black and red berry flavors with soft acidity and a peppery finish.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, named after the lieu-dit in Lalande-de-Pomerol, the 2024 Château La Chenade is deep purple-hued and has impressive aromatics of juicy black cherries, violets, red plums, and tobacco. This upfront, juicy, medium-bodied, round, lush 2024 is a crowd pleaser.

The 2024 La Chenade was picked on September 22 and September 28 for the Merlot and Cabernet Franc, respectively. It then matured in 52% new oak. Lovely blueberry and violet scents blossom on the nose, fresh and seductive in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, gentle grip, fine backbone and a subtle graphite note on the finish. This will be difficult to resist from the get-go.

The 2024 La Chenade is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and textured, the 2024 has so much to offer Dark red fruit, mocha, espresso, lavender and licorice all meld together in a sumptuous, beautifully layered Lalande-de-Pomerol that hits all the right notes. Floral and citrus overtones perk up the vibrant finish.

Flowers, cocoa, plums, and red cherries fill the perfume. Medium-bodied, with a bright, crisp, character, there is freshness, and elegance on the mid-palate, and in the fruity, open, ready-to-go finish. Produced from 85% Merlot, with 15% Cabernet Franc, 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2027-2036.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 La Chenade offers up aromas of pepper, pencil shavings, dark berries and licorice. Medium-bodied, structured and firm, it's layered with a good chassis of tannins built around tangy acids, concluding with a grippy, short finish.

Ripe and concentrated, a lovely texture to this straight away, satin like tannins with fresh raspberry and creamy blackcurrant. Quite a soft palate, not too tense or lean, filling and calm. Controlled with such approachability, while staying cool and fresh. Appealing. Still with great structure. Touches of liquorice, cola and chocolate. 3.72pH. A yield of 35hl/ha.
