Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2004 horizontal tasting. The Château Valandraud 2004 has a well-defined and comparatively complex bouquet with brisk blackberry, dark plum and sandalwood aromas that open nicely in the glass. The oak is nicely integrated here and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry. There is good depth and energy here, building nicely to a composed, truffle and smoke-tinged finish that has a sense of classicism beginning to come through with age. Excellent Mon. Thunevin! Tasted March 2014.

The deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Valandraud exhibits a classic bouquet of white chocolate, espresso roast, creme de cassis, cherry jam, and a hint of barbecue spices. Medium to full-bodied, powerful, rich, structured, and pure, it is another top-notch effort from proprietor Jean-Luc Thunevin. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

Saturated ruby, with blue highlights. Wild aromas of black raspberry, cassis and dark chocolate. Sweet on entry, then penetrating and powerful in the middle, with a firm edge of acidity. The massive tannins (IPT of 100!) reach the front teeth. There's something a bit stunted about this monster, which I tasted just before its bottling. Thunevin told me that the vines had been quite stressed, and that following a late harvest he did a 35% saignee But the wine took forever to make, and to fall bright, and because Thunevin did not want to fine it, "only waiting helped." Still, this seems very much a "worked" wine.

Dark ruby in color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and toasty oak. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a medium finish. Solid for the vintage. Best after 2010. 1,665 cases made.

Monumental cette année, avec un tannin vigoureux mais pas agressif et une densité de texture qui marque une évolution par rapport à des millésimes précédents un peu plus policés. La classe du cru se révèlera pleinement avec une très longue garde.
