Bright red-ruby. Very ripe, expressive aromas of black raspberry, kirsch licorice and iron, with a candied fruit quality adding verve. Silky and sweet on entry, then pliant in the middle, with sound acidity and sexy floral and violet nuances framing and lifting the smoky red fruit flavors. Plenty of personality here, and not at all overdone. Finishes with suave tannins and very good length. An outperformer for the year.

Dark, bright cherry colour and very sweet cherry fruit aromas as well. Smooth, dry and just about fresh. Drink 2012-16

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, fast opaker Kern, violette Reflexe.

Bright ruby. Reticent, high-toned black fruit aromas. Quite closed and backward today, showing less mid-palate sweetness and breadth than the 2006 did a year ago. Plenty of material here but tannic and youthfully tough today. Perhaps in an awkward stage.

Looks quite developed. Ripe, almost tired fruit on the nose. Very sweet, worked fruit with lots of work on the tannins to produce an almost New World style of wine. Very drying finish – and hot! – prevents a higher mark. But there is certainly comforting alcohol on the finish! Full marks for effort if not for precise attainment.

Another extracted, dry, tart wine.

Soft and easy, with berry, tobacco and light chocolate character. Medium body, medium tannins and a light finish. —J.S.
