Chateau Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

The heterogeneity marked this 2012 vintage, from the budding, disrupted by a cool and rainy April, to the veraison that took place slowly. Fortunately, the months of July and August were ideally warm and dry. This mild summer weather allowed the property to carry out a very meticulous work in order to reduce the climatic consequences of Spring. For two months, the teams did everything possible to make the harvest as homogeneous as possible by dropping the most late grapes at the time of the veraison. The harvest began, for the reds and the whites, under the sun. 2012 is a very beautiful vintage for early terroirs such as ours.

Deep, pliant and resonant, the 2012 Quintus offers lovely depth and fine overall balance. The flavors are dark and nicely layered. Menthol, leather and spice flesh out as the wine shows off its ample, broad personality. The 2012 should drink well for the next 15-20 years. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what the Dillon family can achieve here in the coming years and decades.

The 2012 Quintus (89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc) is made in a firm, structured style with a hint of minerality, dark plum and black currant fruit, touches of cherries and spice, along with some background oak. It is medium-bodied, well-made, and pure. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.

Very subtle and refined with blueberries, chocolate and hints of spices. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Very, very fine. Very, very delicious, too! Better in 2017.

Briar, black currant and licorice root notes form the core, with good energy to the briary grip. A tobacco lining runs through the finish. Shows good length and cut overall. Drink now through 2022. 1,303 cases made. –JM

Full ruby.  High-pitched aromas of redcurrant, minty blackberry and flowers.  Juicy and vinous, with harmonious acidity keeping the moderately concentrated flavors of blackcurrant and herbs fresh.  The persistent finish features broad, building tannins that avoid dryness.  A faint green edge at the back lowered my score.

Is the increase in price since Quintus changed its name (from Tertre-Daugay) and ownership justified? The Haut-Brion team has certainly given it an extra dimension, producing a wine that is fine, floral and subtle with flavours of plum, red cherry and smoky oak, but there is better value elsewhere. The second wine of Quintus is a blend of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc (less Cabernet this year compared to 2012.) It has a lifted bouquet of macerated dark cherries, spice and kirsch that is nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight bitterness on the entry. There are firm tannins here, nice depth on the finish – a “solid” Saint Emilion without the frills. Tasted April 2013.

Very pure, offering notes of bright cassis and cherry preserves, contributing to a supple mouthfeel. Shows good length, with a chalky persistence. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.

Drink 2019-2030
89% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc. Own broad-shoulder bottle shape and heavy glass. Boo! Intense crimson; much deeper than the Dragon de Quintus. Really rather refined and sophisticated on the nose. Very youthful with the oak and fruit far from married but vigorous and gutsy – with this smooth overlay of a connection with a first growth. Finishes a little dry but lots of punch.

Composed of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, the 2012 Quintus is very promising. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of cranberries, mulberries, black cherries, spring flowers and a chalky component. Lush, medium-bodied and accessible, this well-made St.-Emilion is certainly better than what was achieved by the old ownership. It should drink well for 10-12 years.

Formerly known as Tertre Daugay, this 37-acre estate was purchased by the owners of Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion, the Dillon family.
