Château Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2012

L'hétérogénéité marqua ce millésime 2012, du débourrement, perturbé par un mois d'avril frais et pluvieux, à la véraison qui se déroula lentement. Heureusement, les mois de juillet et août furent idéalement chauds et secs. Ce temps estival clément a permis à la propriété de réaliser un travail très méticuleux afin de réduire les conséquences climatiques du Printemps.
Pendant deux mois, les équipes ont tout fait pour rendre la vendange la plus homogène possible en faisant tomber notamment les raisins les plus en retard au moment de la véraison. Les vendanges débutèrent, pour les rouges et les blancs, sous le soleil. 2012 est un très beau millésime pour les terroirs précoces tels que les nôtres.

Deep, pliant and resonant, the 2012 Quintus offers lovely depth and fine overall balance. The flavors are dark and nicely layered. Menthol, leather and spice flesh out as the wine shows off its ample, broad personality. The 2012 should drink well for the next 15-20 years. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what the Dillon family can achieve here in the coming years and decades.

The 2012 Quintus (89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc) is made in a firm, structured style with a hint of minerality, dark plum and black currant fruit, touches of cherries and spice, along with some background oak. It is medium-bodied, well-made, and pure. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.

Very subtle and refined with blueberries, chocolate and hints of spices. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Very, very fine. Very, very delicious, too! Better in 2017.

Briar, black currant and licorice root notes form the core, with good energy to the briary grip. A tobacco lining runs through the finish. Shows good length and cut overall. Drink now through 2022. 1,303 cases made. –JM

Full ruby. High-pitched aromas of redcurrant, minty blackberry and flowers. Juicy and vinous, with harmonious acidity keeping the moderately concentrated flavors of blackcurrant and herbs fresh. The persistent finish features broad, building tannins that avoid dryness. A faint green edge at the back lowered my score.

Is the increase in price since Quintus changed its name (from Tertre-Daugay) and ownership justified? The Haut-Brion team has certainly given it an extra dimension, producing a wine that is fine, floral and subtle with flavours of plum, red cherry and smoky oak, but there is better value elsewhere.
