Sweet and sour cherries in addition to spicy oak, crushed stones, flowers, and underbrush make up the complex aromatics found in this open-knit, well-developed Pavie Macquin. While it does not reveal the weight or concentration of such top vintages as 2003, 2000, and 1998, it is still a substantial wine. Give it another 1-3 years of cellaring, and consume it over the next 12-13 years. As the 2001 sat in the glass, it reminded me of a premier cru from the Cote d’Or.

This shows wonderful floral and ripe fruit aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, with refined tannins and a long, refreshing finish. Very refined and long. A pretty thing. Superclean. Best after 2007.

After a relatively unimpressive, somewhat monolithic showing its first year in cask, this effort has blossomed beautifully, and certainly looks like a candidate for an outstanding rating once bottled. A tighter, more elegant, less exuberant and forthcoming Pavie Macquin, this wine nevertheless is impressive, with a saturated blue/purple color and gorgeous but somewhat reticent aromas of sweet cherries interwoven with cassis, licorice, and mineral. Medium to full-bodied, pure, with high extract, moderately high tannin, and impressive richness, this 2001 will require some patience. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.

Alors qu’il était peu impressionnant et accusait un manque de complexité pendant sa première année d’élevage le 2001 de Pavie Macquin s’est magnifiquement épanoui. Il est plus élégant, mais aussi plus serré, moins exubérant et moins épanoui que de coutume, mais pas pour autant moins impressionnant. Sa robe d’un bleu-pourpre soutenu accompagne des arômes quelque peu réticents, mais absolument somptueux, de douce cerise nuancés de cassis, de réglisse et de minéral. Suit en bouche un ensemble moyennement corsé, qui ne concède rien en matière de pureté malgré son impressionnante richesse en extrait et ses tannins modérément abondants. Ce vin, qui requiert une certaine garde, sera parfait dans les 12 à 13 ans, suivant une garde de 1 à 3 ans.

La robe apparaît profonde et brillante ; le nez exprime avec beaucoup de séduction un grand fruit racé associé à des notes finement épicées. En bouche, le vin dévoile une trame onctueuse et une longueur d’une fraîcheur et d’une persistance aromatique remarquables. C’est, à notre sens, l’un des cinq plus grands Saint-Emilion de l’année.

The dark ruby/purple-colored 2001 is a lean, elegant, light effort from this brilliantly run property owned by Nicolas Thienpont (Stephane Derenoncourt is the consultant). This wine offers aromas of sweet cherries and minerals. As good as it is, the 2001 is a medium-bodied, pure yet attenuated offering lacking the multiple dimensions, extract, and richness of recent vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015.
