A seductive style of Palmer, the 1997 will have many admirers (assuming they can afford it). It boasts a dark ruby/plum/purple color in addition to a seductive bouquet of sweet berry fruit, and an elegant, medium-bodied, fruit-driven, easy-going, fleshy personality. While there is little weight and density, the wine's harmony is excellent. Drink it over the next 8-9 years.

Classy wine. Lovely berry, plum and floral character. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, fruity finish. Love to drink this stuff. Drink now through 2006.

Palmer's 1997 has put on weight since I tasted it a year ago. It is an elegant, medium-bodied, soft, supple wine that will be ready to drink after bottling. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, it displays a deep ruby color, as well as an attractive nose of white flowers and black fruits. Soft, elegant, and seductive, it will drink well after bottling. Anticipated maturity: now-2011.

Only tasted once, the 1997 Palmer did not perform impressively. The color is medium dark ruby. The nose was closed, although some earthy, dusty, cherry/berry aromas emerged with coaxing. In the mouth, the wine lacks substance, seems short and hollow in the mid-palate, with a hint of new oak, ripe plums, and cherries. The finish is lean and attenuated, with dry tannin. Can this wine really be this uninspiring?
