Château Léoville Poyferré - Saint-Julien 2008

The work of the man, the soil and the sun of September made it possible to wait for optimal maturity until the beginning of October. From November to March the rains were frequent, interspersed with periods of extreme cold. The hot and humid spring was favorable for the awakening of the vine and for a very short and uniform flowering for all the grape varieties. The month of July is very sunny, many days exceed 30 °. Even if the temperatures remain rather high, the month of August is its opposite: the heavy rains impose numerous passages in the vines and the early stripping (doubling, green harvesting) plays all its role.

Chewy and rich, with blackberry, mineral and dark chocolate character. Full body, with polished tannins and a long finish. Give it three to four years of bottle age before opening.

Very direct, with black currant and fig paste jumping out and driving all the way through the lightly muscular finish, where extra iron, espresso and charcoal notes fill in. An iron edge lingers. This needs a little time. Best from 2013 through 2019. -J.M

One of the finest over-achieving efforts in this vintage as well as a “best buy” for a top-flight St.-Julien, this 2008 is an irresistible success. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple color, lots of unctuosity and a boatload of sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, smoke and oak. Full-bodied, remarkably concentrated and stunningly pure and textured, this sensational wine is already drinking well, and will be even better with 2-3 years of cellaring. It should last for 20-25 years. Bravo! Drink 2013-2028

Dunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand.

(64% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot; from a yield of 43 hl/ha) Inky, glass-staining ruby. The nose initially showed weedy and smoky beef notes, then opened to reveal balsamic cocoa and spicy plum aromas. A rich, deep wine of considerable power and grip, with loads of plum and blackcurrant fruit flavor. Finishes long, with hints of cedar and truffle and very good grip. There's just a hint of youthfully harsh tannins at the back, but they will resolve with bottle age.

This powerful, dense, full-bodied 2008 is still backward and unevolved, but it possesses a dense purple color as well as sweet aromas of creme de cassis, vanillin, crushed rocks, and flowers. With high but ripe tannin and a long finish, this wine will benefit from 5-8 years of cellaring, and should keep for three decades thereafter.

Couleur rouge sombre, intense, belle.

Dark crimson. Rather raw on the nose – some underripe fruit? Sweet start then a bit rhubarby – smashed fruit. Fades very fast. Drink 2013-19

A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Ripe saturated blackberry on the nose with touches of cedar and smoke all in Poyferre’s usual extrovert style. The palate has very good fruit concentration with pure blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry and cedar. Good sense of mineralité and tension on the finish. Great length. Much improvement over the 2007. Excellent. Tasted April 2009.

Black-red, rich, plummy and smoky blackcurrant fruit, well-concentrated, fleshy ripeness, broad and fresh, with firm tannins and inherent class is evident in the quality of the fruit. Drink 2017-30.

There's beautiful purity of fruit in this young wine, with blackberry and raspberry on the nose and hints of toasty oak. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and silky tannins. Turns fresh and lively, with sweet fruit on the finish.
