Tasted at the château for a 30-year vertical tasting. The 1998 Lagrange is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. It has a fragrant bouquet with raspberry, crushed strawberry and leather scents all well defined with impressive focus. It unfurls gently in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a touch of spiciness on the entry, fine structure with plenty of tobacco and cedar towards the finish. It is again, very classic in style with a touch of sage lingering on the aftertaste. Drink now-2025. Tasted March 2014.

This dark ruby-colored, elegant, attractive effort offers spicy new oak, medium body, excellent concentration as well as depth, surprising softness, and early appeal. As with many Medocs, Lagrange's tannins are much friendlier since bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015.

Harmonious. Good dark color, with currant, vanilla and fresh fruit. Medium-bodied but slightly diluted, with fine tannins and a lovely finish. Not quite as good as from barrel. Best after 2006. 21,665 cases made.

Powerful tannin may prove troublesome in 7-10 years, but this 1998 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as sweet black currant notes on the attack, abundant quantities of toasty new oak, fine ripeness and intensity, and noticeable grip and structure. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2015.

The 1998 Lagrange is deep ruby/purple-colored with copious amounts of spicy oak in the moderately jammy nose of black currants and earth. This effort is light, with medium body, a soft mid-palate, but hard tannin in the compact, compressed finish. It should turn out to be very good, but the tannin needs to be watched. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016.
