Château Coutet - Barsac 2014

For this new vintage, we recorded an unusually rainy and mild winter, which resulted in redoing the water reserves of the soil and triggering an early bud burst of the vine. From April to July, an alternation of rainy and cool periods and more sunny and warm days will contribute to the good vegetative development of the vine, optimizing photosynthesis. The month of August, cooler, delayed the ripening of the grapes. The period from early September to mid-October was marked by the absence of rain and by temperatures above seasonal norms. These exceptional conditions contributed, on the one hand to the complete ripening of the grapes, on the other hand to the dehydration of the grapes and their sugar concentration by drip. On October 16th, we had a major storm in the commune of Barsac, humidifying the soil and initiating the phenomenon of botrytisation, the conditions of the following weeks were ideal for the development of the mushroom. In the end, if a slight delay in maturation was observed at the end of August, the exceptional weather conditions of September and October allowed us to make an exceptional wine, combining the freshness of the passerillage with the complexity of botrytis.

The 2014 Coutet is absolutely delicious. Nothing stands out, instead it is the wine's overall balance that is most impressive. Attractive scents of pear, white flowers and pastry convey and impression of finesse. The style is a bit laid back, but the Coutet is a real overachiever.

Elegant, balanced Coutet with ripe mango and tropical fruits that are balanced by fresh acidity. Focused and lean with fairly long length. A wine with very good concentration and depth.

Looks heavy in the glass. Unusually spicy. This wine really grabs the palate in a tactile way. Lots of texture and tension between sweetness and acidity. Exuberant. And unashamed.

This shows a lively density, intensity of fruit and spiciness. Pineapples as well. Full body, medium sweetness and a long finish.

Best Coutet ever! 19/20 2025 – 2060

96–98. Barrel Sample. Aromatic with the a note of wildflower honey, the palate brings white fruit flavors and rich botrytis power. The midpalate is densely concentrated with fruit tones, yet lightened by a vein of acidity.

Plump at first, with a praline note around the heather, pineapple and nectarine flavors. Stretches out, with a juicy feel, while orange blossom and white peach accents fill in, imparting lift and cut. This packs a bit of power, but there’s lots of buried freshness as well. The finish is seriously long already.—J.M.
