Château Clerc Milon - Pauillac 2006

The year 2006 is surprising, and will be remembered by its unusual weather conditions. The vintage is indeed marked by a generally dry and hot climate, with temperatures during the months of June, July and September well above seasonal averages. These atypical conditions, which occurred at key periods in the development of the vine, have profoundly and favorably influenced the future quality of the grapes. The end of the winter, characterized by heavy rainfall, is followed by a dry and hot weather that settles in a sustainable way in April, May and June thus making it possible to catch the relative delay of beginning of season. Flowering is early and grouped at the end of May. Just like flowering, veraison is also very early (half-veraison with 4 days in advance on the usual dates). However, there is a slowdown in the latter due to the heat of the second half of July. As of August 31st, the total rainfall since January 1st, 2006 was 459 mm, for an average of 517 mm. Maturation, initially slowed down due to cooler temperatures in August, subsequently accelerated thanks to exceptional weather conditions in the first half of September with scorching temperatures at the beginning of the period. A period of high heat and humidity accelerates the maturity of Merlots that are collected from September 20. The harvest continued until October 5 with variable climatic conditions on grapes arrived at full maturity and in excellent health condition.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Clerc-Milon has a very respectable bouquet: red fruit rather than black, laced with tobacco, woodland and dried herbs aromas, quite Saint Julien-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, succulent opening: blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with salt and a dash of white pepper that leave the mouth tingling on the Merlot-driven finish. Tasted January 2016.

Mid crimson. Very solid and 'masculine' with muted, obdurate, leathery notes. Then lovely texture and freshness with real depth and class. Still a little note of greenness on the finish but good stuff. Drink 2012-2020

Offers a gorgeous nose of crushed blueberry and cream, with a hint of milk chocolate. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a pretty finish. Best after 2014.

From the same stable as Mouton Rothschild and d’Armailhac, Clerc Milon, despite the relatively high percentage of Merlot (44%) combined with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Cabernet Franc, is dense, rich, tannic, and backward. Surprisingly muscular for this offering, which often exhibits a more precocious side, it offers up abundant amounts of creme brulee, chocolate, cedar, and black currants. This full-bodied Pauillac displays gorgeous purity and depth as well as moderately high tannins in the finish. Because of its freshness, structure, and density, it is reminiscent of a 1996 Medoc. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028. 91+

Ruby-red. Plum, currant, graphite, cedar and smoky, nutty oak on the nose. Big, round and spicy, with lovely mid-palate fat and sweetness to the enticing currant and coffee flavors. This has very good breadth, although Dhalluin finds it "vertical" today and feels it has suffered more from the recent fining than either d'Armailhac or Mouton. But there's excellent supporting material here for the wine's tannins.

Il joue la rondeur, l'exubérance et la suavité de bouche, avec un joli gras et des tanins sphériques. Très joli vin qui évoluera parfaitement.

Deep colour, rich cassis nose with spicy plumpness and very seductive fruit with ripe tannins to hold it. More sensual than in 2005. 2012-25

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand.

A brilliant success for Clerc-Milon, this deep ruby/purple-hued blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc exhibits notes of espresso roast, chocolate, cedar, and copious amounts of black currant fruit. It is a medium to full-bodied, pure, rich, layered, intense effort built along the lines of the 1996, but with more forward fruit at present. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025.

Tasted at Mouton Rothschild. A touch of brine on the nose that is a little pinched, then a barnyard note that I rarely find on Clerc Milon. The palate has good concentration through, good acidity and a touch of liquorish on the mid-palate. More savoury that I expected: this Clerc Milon has character but misses a little breeding.

Un échantillon très fatigué, deux autres remarquables par leur définition aromatique, leur velouté de texture, leurs notes très profondes et terriennes si caractéristiques de ce terroir. Il devrait même dépasser Armailhac avec le temps.

Darkly tannic, but constructed so that the fresh black currant Cabernet fruits shine through. A solid wine but enlivened but ripe acidity. —R.V.

Notably deep crimson with a pale rim. Not much nose though it gives the impression of some density underneath. Quite well handled but pretty tough and embryonic – as though this wine got all the press wine. Pretty severe and at this stage ungracious. Obviously more ambitious than the Armailhac from the same, Mouton stable but all structure and no fruit for the moment. Drink 2015-22. 16+

Very good amount of plum and chocolate character on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins. Medium finish. Pretty core of fruit.
