Château Clément Pichon - Haut-Médoc 2014

At the gates of Bordeaux, in the town of Parempuyre, the history of Château Clément Pichon dates back to the fourteenth century. From 1601 to 1880, the castle belongs to the Pichon family, several members of which played an important role in the history of Bordeaux. During this period, the estate exceeds 1,000 hectares. The story also relates the passage of Louis XIV twice on these lands, in 1659 and 1660. In 1881, following a fire, the castle was rebuilt by the Durand-Dassier family. It is the architect Michel Louis Garros, known for its eclectic use of ancient styles that builds the home of Renaissance inspiration. This magnificent building is one of the largest chateaux in the Medoc with over 800 m2 on the ground. The property was acquired by Clément Fayat in 1976. He recreates a vineyard of 25 hectares, thus allowing him to regain his nobility. In memory of the family heiress the castle is renamed Château Clément Pichon in 1985.

Under the same ownership as Château la Dominique in Saint-Emilion, this estate continues to make impressive wine. With its subtle tannins and ripe berry fruits, it is structured while never letting the tannins  overwhelm the fruit. It is an impressive wine to age, so drink from 2021.

Fumée, ample, charnu, cacao, tanins soyeux, beaucoup de fond, un peu extrait, doit s’affiner à l’élevage.

Produced from a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, this wine has notes medium body, an early-drinking personality and notes of coffee bean, earth and black raspberry. 84-86 Pts

The Château Clément-Pichon 2014 has a lot of extraction and richness on the nose (as indeed it tends to boast in every vintage). The palate is ripe and sweet with a lot of extraction, a very “polished," glycerine-rich Haut-Médoc with a balanced, but short, finish.

Very dark purple. Sweet and rich – almost right bank-like! Just a little sour on the end with a note of meat extract. Thick. But no shortage of density. Solid stuff in every way.  Drink 2020-2028

Supple, ripe and generous on the palate with freshness and good mid-palate weight. A well crafted Haut-Medoc red that will be best in 3 to 5 years.

Lots of blackcurrant fruit and quite classy length. Drink: 2018-2024 (87)

86–88. Barrel Sample. This is a ripe and smoky wine with firm tannins and a dense texture of wood and spice. It is too extracted—giving intense chocolate flavors that spoil any fruit.   — R.V.  (4/1/2015)

18/20 2021 – 2040

A dark, fleshy style, with steeped plum and blackberry notes, inlaid with lots of licorice root and fruitcake flavors. Shows ample toast through the finish, but the stuffing is there.
