Château Cheval Blanc - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2002 b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

After a mild spring and little watered, but started under the best auspices when coolness arrived and abundant rains from the 20th. This situation continued until June 10th. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The summer is just as cool, with above normal precipitation in August. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca It was not until September to experience dry weather conditions. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca As a result, the harvest takes place from September 20 to October 8, slightly later than in previous years. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The vegetative cycle of the vines is strongly marked by the unfavorable conditions of this vintage, with in particular a lot of coulure and millerandage on the Merlots. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Despite the cool and wet weather in August, the vintage took full advantage of the September drought. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Thus, despite difficult conditions, the ripening of the berries ended in good conditions, reaching a composition close to the average values ??observed over 5 years. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The slight wilting observed on the berries at the time of harvest accentuates their concentration. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca If 2002 remains the smallest harvest since 1991, the vintage remains qualitatively as a good year for Merlot, and a very good year for Cabernet Franc. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca In the end, the selection is rigorous, 41% of the harvest in Cheval Blanc, and 25% in Petit Cheval. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

Tasted blind at Farr’s 2002 Bordeaux tasting. The nose takes some coaxing from the glass, but reluctantly reveals blackberry, bilberry, graphite and a touch of smoke. The palate displays a ripe entry, quite peppery which indicates some ripe Cabernet Franc, good concentration, quite tarry towards the finish with a hint of iodine on the aftertaste. I have forgotten how pleasurable this Cheval Blanc is, but it needs 2-3 years. Tasted October 2009.

Taut, tough and a bit introvert. Drying tannins on the finish. Drink 2011-18

Smoky, earthy, sweet red and black currant, fig, and menthol notes jump from the glass of this dark ruby/plum-hued, medium-weight Cheval Blanc. Possessing sweet tannin, medium body, and undeniable elegance as well as nobility, this beautifully made effort appears slightly superior (at least to my taste) to the more hyped 2003. Interestingly, yields were 27 hectoliters per hectare in 2002, and 30-31 hectoliters per hectare in 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.

Fantastic aromas of black licorice and sweet tobacco change to raspberries and follow through to a full-bodied palate, with lovely silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Multilayered. A beauty. Best after 2008. 3,330 cases made.

Elégant, policé dans sa structure comme dans son fruit, Cheval Blanc 2002 se développe dans un registre de grande finesse, sans impressionner, mais avec une structure tannique délicate et subtile et une longueur tout en fraicheur.

I expected this wine to display more intensity, weight, and aromatic complexity. A blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the dark ruby-colored 2002 Cheval Blanc exhibits muted aromas of cocoa, mint, cranberries, black cherries, and flowers. Medium-bodied with considerable vigor, freshness, and a cool climate personality, it does not possess the richness, body, or palate persistence found in both the titanic 2000 and 1998, or the underrated 1999 and 2001. This is often an enigmatic wine to taste young, and it has a tendency to put on weight and reveal more character with cask as well as bottle age. We’ll see. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017
