Chateau Chauvin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2018 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48

The 2018 vintage of Château Chauvin is one of the most accomplished of the property, and reflects all the richness of its sandy-clay soil perfectly adapted to climate change. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The various studies carried out since 2014 (soil pits, soil resistivity, vigor mapping, etc.) have made it possible to adapt the work in the vineyard, to manage the harvest, and to refine the vinification by plot. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Similar to 2016, 2018 was marked by two very distinct periods: a wet start to the year, and a very dry end of summer and autumn. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 After a rainy and cool winter, the bud burst is late but homogeneous. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 From mid-April the weather becomes more lenient, with strong thermal amplitudes: the development of the vine is rapid and harmonious. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The mild temperatures and the dampness of the soil placed significant mildew pressure on the Bordeaux region until mid-July. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 However, Chauvin resisted well thanks to a geographical location allowing good ventilation of the vines and precise support from the technical teams. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The integral drainage of the property effectively evacuates excess water. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Flowering started in this context and took place exceptionally evenly and quickly: mid-flowering took place on May 31 for Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and June 4 for Cabernet-Sauvignon. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The hot and dry summer compensates for the excess water in the spring. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Maturation takes place in sunny conditions, giving rise to an early degradation of plant aromas, and stimulating the synthesis of polyphenols. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Mid-véraison is reached around August 5th. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 Between mid-August and mid-September, the vine experiences water stress which remains moderate thanks to the presence of clay in the subsoils, and strong thermal amplitudes between night and day, favorable to qualitative ripening, for 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 an optimal coloring and aromatic potential. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The very fine late autumn allows the harvest to be approached with complete peace of mind, with homogeneity preserved throughout the year, perfect ripeness of the berries, and good extractability. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48 The Merlot is harvested from September 26 to October 5, then the Cabernet Franc on October 12 and Cabernet-Sauvignon on October 13. 4df5d4d9d819b397555d03cedf085f48

Still in barrel, due to be bottled in the next few months. This is gorgeous, plump fruit, beautifully controlled in feel, elegant and silky but gourmet and easy to love. This is a great wine and one of the best Chauvins I've tasted young. Underlines that for me 2018 is a great vintage in St Emilion, certainly for medium-term drinking, but I would feel pretty confident this will go the long haul, and it has seriously improved over ageing to this point. First year of HVE3-certification. 50% new oak, harvest September 26 to October 13. Drinking Window 2026 - 2040

The 2018 Chauvin, the property of Sylvie Cazes, is very perfumed on the nose with small dark cherries, blueberry and light spicy top notes. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry, melted tar and graphite notes. This is nicely focused with a pleasing bitter edge on the finish that urges you back for another sip. Very fine.

Medium-bodied, polished, earthy and leafy with succulent cherries, plums, soft textures and roundness. The finish with its thyme-infused red fruits really hits the spot.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Chauvin is a little shy to begin, revealing pretty scents of wild blueberries, kirsch and warm black cherries followed by hints of violets and star anise. Full, wonderfully intense and concentrated, there is a lot of bright, crunchy fruit here with firm, rounded tannins and a refreshing lift to the long finish. Nicely done!

A pretty and polished young red with dark-berry and cherry character, medium body, fine tannins and a clean and vivid finish.

This is a good showing from Chauvin, owned by Sylvie Cazes. It has a vibrant and intense purple colour, with ink and graphite notes and significant tannins which cradle rather than smother the blackberry and bilberry fruits.
