Chateau Canon - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2009

With the exception of a storm in August, the 2009 vintage was marked by low rainfall. The flowering took place at the beginning of June in a homogeneous way and the veraison from 25 July. During the summer, the beautiful days of August and September with high temperatures followed cool nights, favoring a slow and complete maturation of the grapes. Due to a very low level of precipitation in June, July and August, the berries remained small, revealing an aromatic richness and intense color. In these special conditions, the clay-limestone terroir of Canon made the difference by allowing to preserve the freshness of the vintage. A sunny climate allowed us to harvest in the best conditions. The exceptional health status of the grapes facilitated the sorting work of our grape harvesters. 2009 marks the extension of the chest. 6 new stainless steel tanks of small volume were added at the beginning of the summer in order to refine the parcel tracking. • Alcoholic fermentation for 12 days in double-walled, thermoregulated, frustoconical-shaped stainless steel tanks. Reassembly: 2 per day Temperature: 28 ° C • Maceration for 2 weeks. • Malolactic fermentation: from early November to mid December, 1/3 in barrels and 2/3 in vats • Maturing in barrels for 18 to 20 months. French oak, medium to medium-long heater 60% new barrels for Château Canon, 10% new barrels for Clos Canon Racking every three months, egg whites, no filtration

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. Two bottles were tasted in different flights, the first seeming to be just a little more monotonous than I would have liked, however the second was far more attractive. It has a beautiful nose with lifted blackcurrant and bilberry fruit laced with minerals and cedar. The oak is quite noticeable but in synch with the fruit. The palate is silky and smooth on the entry. It is fleshy in the mouth, but belying the firm structure underneath. Perhaps it would benefit from more tension towards the finish but that is a minor quibble. Charming as ever. Tasted January 2013.

Ruby-red. Superripe, slightly roasted aromas of cherry, graphite, spices and herbs. Then thick, sweet and very ripe on the palate but a bit youthfully restrained. This full-bodied Canon could use a bit more lift but maintains very good focus. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and excellent length.

The finest Canon since the 1982, the 2009 (75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc) reveals a dense blue/purple color along with a classic nose of chalk dust, blueberries, black raspberries, black currants and a touch of wood smoke. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and loaded with an inner framework of minerality and moderately high tannins, this backward, but stylish, concentrated Canon will benefit from 7-8 years of cellaring and last for three decades.

Aromas of nuts, spices, chocolate powder, then changes to fruits and flowers. Fascinating. Full body, with silky tannins and a wonderful intensity and super polished tannins with a long, long finish. Super refined. Best Canon in years. Try in 2016.

This is a creamy, lush, hedonist's wine, with suave, textured layers of fig sauce, puréed plum and cassis woven with hints of mocha and pain d'épices. Picks up grip though, joined by a roasted mesquite hint on the finish for added length. Best from 2014 through 2025. 4,415 cases made. –JM

Red-ruby color is less dark than most other '09 Saint-Emilions, which to me is not at all a bad thing. Refined, perfumed aromas of redcurrant, almond flower, incense and cinnamon. Enters the mouth light and fresh, displaying attractive red berry and mineral flavors nicely framed by sound acidity. This very well balanced wine seems almost too easy to drink now but has excellent focus and grip, and plenty of inner-mouth energy. No doubt it will develop more complexity and depth with bottle age. Almost Burgundian in style, this is a subtle wine of real substance and nuance, made in a less showy style that is not out to grab headlines. One of the most successful Canons in a long time.

Definite wood aromas, the fruit buried under the high toast flavors. This gives dryness as well as extract. The wine comes across hard, tight, almost dark in character.

Brilliant this year – so satisfying and refined. Has to be the best Canon for a number of years. Certainly no block-buster but pure and silky with length and line. Exquisite. Drink 2016-2040

A little paler than some. Lightish cherry red. Glossy, gamey, almost animal nose. Rich and sweet but with certain dryness on the finish. There is some real life here. Very glamorous. Sumptuous and flattering, very polished, racy and sinewy and like a racehorse. Good enterprising energetic stuff! Drink 2017-2030

Good nose. If I had to make a choice, I might say I preferred the wonderful 2008 at this property, but it's a close run thing. This is owned by the Wertheimer brothers of Rauzan-Ségla, and JOhn Kolasa is again director - you can feel the same drive towards pure and precisely places fruit. Grapes planted at the estate are 75% merlot, 25% cabernet franc.

This is the best Canon since 1982, and it is possibly capable of eclipsing that legendary vintage. It has taken a while for the proprietors, the Wertheimer brothers (the owners of Chanel and the Margaux estate Rauzan-Segla) to get Canon back to its former glory. Yields in 2009 were 35 hectoliters per hectare, and the harvest occurred between September 28 and October 5. The blend is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, with a natural alcohol level of 14%. Dense ruby/purple and full-bodied, with terrific blueberry and raspberry fruit intermixed with spring flower garden scents, with extraordinary density, purity, and a multi-layered texture, this is a prodigious Canon with sweet tannins and lots of viscosity. It should drink well for 30 or more years. Bravo! (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2040.

This is a more crammed and loaded Canon. Its opaque purple hue precedes excellent scents of plum extract, mulberry, crème de cassis, flower, and liquefied-minerals. Superb in its full-bodied, rich, flavorful mushroom and cherry. The 2009 offering is substantive and caressing in tannin, allowing for fabulous potential! Maturity period 2013-2024+

Deep, dense ruby purple, quite inky in colour, very attractive nose, lovely sweetly ripe black fruits quality, super supple tannins and fresh, savoury acidity, with some dark chocolatey sweetness of fruit and excellent overall balance, very well-made, fine-boned, well-proportioned and balanced overall.

What a gorgeous nose, with sweet and delicate fruits such as sliced plums that turn to milk chocolate and flowers. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. You want to drink this right away. 75 percent Merlot and 25 percent Cabernet Franc.
