Bien qu'il soit plus riche que ses aînés de 1998 et 1999, le 2001 de Calon Ségur ne saurait rivaliser avec son aîné d'un an. Issu d'une sélection de 65% de la récolte totale, il se ocmpose, comme de coutume, à 60% de cabernet sauvignon, à 30% de Merlot, et pour le reste de Cabernet franc. Ce vin achève ses fermentations malolactiques à parts égales en fûts et en cuves. D'un rubis pourpre profond, le 2001 de Calon exhale un doux nez de mûre, de cerises, d'herbes séchées, de terre et de réglisse. Doux à l'attaque, il révèle en bouche des tannins mûrs et une précision d'excellent aloi et sa finale moyennement corsée et persistante, est impressionnante de pureté. L'ensemble pourrait être renoté à la hausse s'il s'étoffait en cours d'élevage. AM 2006-2018

I suspect this 2001 will shut down (as most young Calon-Segurs do), although it appears more forward and evolved than the huge, backward, but totally dormant 2000. The plum/ruby-colored 2001 reveals aromas of damp earth, cranberries, cherries, herbs, and forest floor. While lighter than its older sibling, it is medium-bodied, elegant, and should emerge from its post-bottling sleep in 4-5 years, and drink well for 14-15. Think of it as a lighter-weight 1988 (one of the stars of the vintage).

Elegant and spicy, with blackberry and earth character. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a medium to long finish. Not quite up to par with the barrel sample, but outstanding. Best after 2006.

Approximately 65% of the crop made it into the 2001 Calon-Segur, which is a standard blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Half the crop enjoyed malolactic in barrel and half in tank. Although this is a richer effort than the 1999 as well as 1998, it falls short of the profound 2000. The deep ruby/purple-colored 2001 exhibits a sweet nose of mulberries, cherries, dried herbs, earth, and licorice, a sweet attack, ripe tannin, good definition, and a medium-bodied, long finish with impressive purity. If this St.-Estephe fleshes out, it will merit an outstanding score, but it is lighter and less dense than the 2000. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018.
