This wine performed better from cask. Out of bottle, it displays a medium ruby color, and a distinctive nose of underbrush, damp earth, and loamy-tinged black currant fruit. Moderately tannic, with medium body and some angularity, this wine possesses good extract, but not much soul or character. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2012. This wine did not perform as well as I hoped. It has the potential to be one to two points better, but after tasting it several times, it appears to be a good but uninspiring effort.

Well-crafted red. Vivid blackberry and violet aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and very silky, with lovely tannins and a medium aftertaste of fruit and toasted oak. Best after 2000.

This is the finest Beychevelle since 1989. The dark ruby/purple color, and nicely integrated toasty oak, floral, and sweet, black currant aromas are attractive. The wine has put on some fat since I tasted it last year, exhibiting a supple, velvety-textured, moderately tannic, pure, elegant style that is typical of this property's top efforts. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016. Last tasted 1/97

Beychevelle, owners of one of the great terroirs of the northern Medoc, continues to produce wines that are frustratingly irregular in quality. This is the finest Beychevelle since 1989. The dark ruby/purple color, and nicely integrated toasty oak, floral, and sweet, blackcurrant aromas are attractive. The wine has put on some fat since I tasted it last year, exhibiting a supple, velvety-textured, moderately tannic, pure, elegant style that is typical of this property's top efforts. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016.

The 1995 reveals a medium to dark ruby color, toasty new oak in the nose, some spice and herb notes, and meagerly-endowed red fruits. The attack exhibits medium body, average concentration, some sweet redcurrant fruit, low acidity, and a clean, tannic finish. It does not reveal the concentration or character that I would expect from such a well-situated vineyard.
