The 2021 Vintage:

2021 was marked by a dry winter, followed by a mild spring and summer. The vines produced small berries and clusters, requiring targeted irrigation. Despite a small harvest, the ideal conditions allowed us to produce powerful and concentrated wines, with excellent structure and lush tannins.

While I admire Chappellet Signature Cabernet, this wine greedily seized all my attention when it was poured into my glass. With stellar balance for a big wine, this has superb ageing potential and given that it already looks epic as a youth, the future here is guaranteed to impress.

(Napa Valley; 95% Cabernet Sauvignon; 14.5% alcohol). Rich, dense, compact, with an incredibly concentrated spherical core – a black whole of black fruit. Cinders, struck match, incense, patchouli, dark cherries and darker berries. Big-boned and heavy (like the bottle)! Considerable, Impressive if a bit of a bruiser. Body-building, muscular, this will need at least a decade, with a lot of tannin still to resolve.

Concentrated black cherry and cassis fruits on the opening, overlaid with violet and peony floral character, moves upwards through the palate as a juicy freshness heads in underneath the fruit, great quality, closing out with bitter cocoa bean, fennel and espresso character. Great quality, a long term wine that will reward patience. Heavy bottle.

A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, all aged in new French oak, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill appears destined to be another classic. Penetrating aromas of cassis and red berries are joined by hints of violets, dried sage, crushed stones and pencil shavings on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich and intensely concentrated, framed by dusty tannins that linger easily on the long, mouthwatering finish.

The flagship 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is based on 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Dense purple-hued, with incredible aromatics of black and blue fruits, camphor, liquid violets, tobacco, and graphite, it has a remarkable sense of opulence in its aromas and flavors and delivers full-bodied richness, a massive mid-palate, building tannins, and a thrilling finish. It reminds me of an improved 2013. This heavenly Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon will evolve for 30-40 years in cold cellars and is another absolutely sensational wine from this estate. Don't miss it.

The 2021 Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5% Petit Verdot in the blend, is deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps with vibrant scents of blackcurrant cordial, juicy black plums, and pencil lead giving way to hints of violets, charcoal, and iron ore. The full-bodied palate shimmers with vivacious black fruit flavors sparked by mineral and floral notes, supported by wonderfully velvety tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. This is stunning!

Notes of crushed dark berries, chocolate black licorice, iodine, bark and graphite. Wide and encompassing on the palate with a full body and ultra-fine, almost weightless tannins. There is a fine, chalky minerality to it with sea shell, iron and cigar box undertones. Beautiful fruit. Firm and polished. Needs time. Try after 2026.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is another huge, brooding wine in this range. Today, the tannins are searing in their intensity. It’s hard to know if the fruit will ever emerge here. The 2021 is massively tannic and forbidding at this stage.
