It is no exaggeration to say that Chappellet has made history in Napa Valley. Considered one of the pioneers, Chappellet was the second winery established after the repeal of Prohibition and became the 18th registered member of the Napa Valley Vintners. Family-owned for over 50 years, Chappellet is recognized as one of Napa Valley's most historic estates. Today, the second generation is committed to continuing the vision of their parents, Donn and Molly Chappellet.

Signature Cabernet Sauvignon

has been Chappellet's flagship wine for over three decades. It is a benchmark for mountain-grown Napa Valley wines, rich in structure with strong aging potential. A seductive wine that reveals concentrated varietal character, it is made from small, intensely aromatic grapes grown in the dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill.

2021 was marked by a dry winter, followed by a mild spring and summer. The vines produced small berries and clusters, requiring targeted irrigation. Despite a small harvest, the ideal conditions allowed us to produce powerful and concentrated wines, with excellent structure and lush tannins.

(Napa Valley; 79% Cabernet Sauvignon; 8% Petit Verdot; 7% Malbec; 6% Merlot; 14.5% alcohol). Cordite. Candlewax. Crushed petals. Dark berry fruits. Super svelte and broad and ample on the attack, a very dense and compact spherical core. Greater density than Inglenook, more concentrated but perhaps a little less limpid and crystalline for that, though still impressively pure. Liquorice on the long rolling finish.

Crushed raspberry, blackberry, rose petal and violets combine to make this an arresting opening, fragrant and characterful. As things settle in the glass, waves of cocoa bean, espresso and deeper cassis notes arrive. Great quality, with balance and a sense of easy welcome. Philip Titus winemaker 41ha of vines.

Domineered by scents of ripe cherries and loamy earth, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a strong effort, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec and 6% Merlot. Medium to full-bodied, with an appealingly taut structure and silky tannins, it should be approachable young yet capable of aging for more than a decade.

Leading off the Cabernet Sauvignon releases, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a larger production release and is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and nearly equal portions of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Merlot. Smoky black fruits, graphite, crushed stone, and tobacco notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, powerful 2021 offering ample mid-palate depth, a layered, textured, balanced mouthfeel, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's a brilliant bottle of wine that will benefit from short-term cellaring and have over two decades of longevity.

Aromas of cassis and dark berries with sweet spices, dried orange peel and minty undertones. Hints of walnuts, too. Medium- to full-bodied with well-integrated, melting tannins. Very silky texture. Succulent and layered, ripe but bright and vivid. Delicious fruit. Long. Attractive now, but better after 2025.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a dense, potent wine. A strong mid-palate and core of fruit gives the 2021 its sense of poise. Plum, blood orange, sweet spice and Kirsch fill out the layers. At once both plush and structured, the 2021 is a fine choice for drinking over the next handful of years, but it is a big wine.
