Castle of the Dauphine - Fronsac 2014

Fronsac, 40km from Bordeaux, the ancestral wine-growing region of the country, worn by Cardinal Richelieu and his descendants, who made it the most appreciated wine at the Louis XV court in the 18th century. The Château de La Dauphine, nestled in an arc of the Dordogne, is in the heart of a 40 ha vineyard (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) making it the second largest property of Fronsac. For 15 years, the Halley family has devoted considerable resources to the meticulous work of the vineyard in organic conversion and to equip the area with the most modern technical installations in the region. The Château de La Dauphine, like the great classified wines, is today registered as one of the unavoidable properties of the right bank of Bordeaux.

The La Dauphine is gorgeous. Succulent black cherries, plums, smoke, licorice and sweet spice meld together in a juicy, forward Fronsac that should drink well pretty much right out of the gate. The style is forward, fruit-driven and racy to the core. There is so much to like here.

Stony plums, espresso, wood and cocoa in character, the wine is forward, round and made for early drinking. 88-89 Pts

The Château La Dauphine 2014 has a lot of richness on the nose, with red cherries and creme de cassis, a big and bold style of Fronsac. The palate is chewy and dense, grippy in the mouth with bold, assertive, sweet figgy fruit. One sample was difficult to asses, another showed more freshness on the finish. It feels quite assertive but has little in the way of finesse. Hopefully it will mellow by the time of bottling. Tasted on four separate occasions.

Succulent and juicy flavors with plenty of red cherry, plum and cassis. The tannins and mid-palate offer good intensity. While the wine is not that complex, there is plenty of charm.

Exuberant cassis aroma. Ripe attack, cassis still evident. Plays on the fruit. Tannins really fine and supple. Lovely length on the finish. Delicious. Drink: 2019-2026 (90+)

Mid crimson. Earthy nose. The fruit is a little gamey and rustic. But honest and straightforward.

A chewy and juicy red with dark berry and wet earth character.

Matière suave et épicée, beaucoup de fraîcheur et d’élégance, tanin élégant, petit manque de profondeur
