The 2000 Larcis Ducasse is an attractive but light-bodied wine, especially given the context of the vintage. The 2000 offers lovely brightness and freshness, but it lacks a bit of body. Even so, it should age gracefully for many years to come. I find the 2000 a pretty wine, but one that lacks visceral thrill that has become customary here in recent years.

Minerals and berries on the nose. Medium-bodied, with medium tannins and a delicate finish. Rather short. Best after 2006.

This is a spectacular terroir that has underachieved for years. However, hotshot guru Stephane Derenoncourt is behind the winemaking as of 2002, so everyone is expecting quality to soar. A pre-Derenoncourt wine, the 2000 is the finest Larcis Ducasse produced in many years. Full-bodied and ripe, with intense, herb-tinged black cherry fruit, admirable texture and mid-palate, this elegant, moderately tannic, dark ruby-colored wine is far superior to recent efforts. A certain dusty quality to the tannins may prove troublesome. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.

From a great terroir, this estate has a tendency to under-perform, so let's hope the 2000 gets into the bottle without excessive fining or filtration as it is the finest Larcis-Ducasse produced in many years. Full-bodied and ripe, with intense black cherry fruit, admirable texture and mid-palate, this elegant, moderately tannic wine is far superior to recent efforts. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.

This great terroir never quite lives up to its potential, but the 2000 is one of the finest efforts in recent years. It reveals a classy nose of wet stones, cherry liqueur, dried herbs, and earth, beautiful purity, medium body, and a sense of elegance, style, and overall balance. It should drink well for 10-15 years.
