The 2013 Carbonnieux has quite an upfront and "confident" nose within the context of the 2013 vintage, emboldened with upfront redcurrant and cranberry fruit mixed with damp soil/woodland aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp tannic backbone: just a touch of sour cherry intermingling with the black fruit with fine precision towards the poised and nicely detailed, almost gravelly finish. This is a very respectable Pessac-Léognan that should drink well over the next 10 years.

Sans être très long, Carbonnieux rouge 2013 offre du plaisir, dans un style très rafraichissant. Idéal à déguster d'ici 2020.

A Pessac-Léognan red with fresh herbs, cocoa and some berries. Medium to full bodied with firm tannins and a slightly short finish. Very much a perfectly enjoyable wine. Drink now.

Medium dark ruby.  Strawberry, sweet cinnamon and red licorice on the nose.  Juicy and light, with delicate pepperminty red fruit flavors and a persistent finish.  I like this wine's clean delivery--and depth--of fruit.

Very dry and the fruit is completely overpowered by sour tannins and an unpleasant oaky finish.

Juicy red fruit, scented vanilla oak, dry and astringent on the palate. The lightness of the body upstages the rest of the wine, leaving it a bit disconnected. An honest wine, but the vintage has not been kind.

The 2013 Carbonnieux is a bit burly in style, but not at all lacking in personality. Smoke, graphite, wild flowers and crushed rocks are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. The 2013 stands out for its energy and persistence.

Purple-red, cassis nose, good middle fruit, nice depth, attractive wine.

Première prise de bois un peu indiscrète, grande délicatesse de texture, tannin fin, évolution de la propriété vers un style plus élégant et plus nuancé. Notes minérales de terroir très originales.

The sample of Carbonnieux Rouge has a dense, almost broody bouquet with dark plum and blackcurrant that is well defined and snugly knit with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a subtle marine influence on the entry. The tannins feel a brittle and the texture shows some hardness, but that will soften by the time of bottling. This should turn out to be a more masculine Pessac-Leognan that might benefit a year or two in bottle.

The vivid raspberry and bright cherry fruit is lined with an iron note, staying focused through the lightly taut finish. —J.M.

Fresh and fruity, this wine is light, with an open texture. It does have some herbal, green flavors that suggest the fruit was not completely ripe at harvest.
