Castellare di Castellina - I Sodi di San Niccolo - Toscana IGT 2020

Castellare di Castellina I Sodi S. Niccolò, a historic Supertuscan

The Domini Castellare di Castellina group was created at the end of the 70s by Paolo Panerai and includes today four prestigious wineries such as the historic Castellare di Castellina in Chianti and Rocca di Frassinello, a joint-venture with Château Lafite Rothschild. All the wineries are supervised by Alessandro Cellai who was mentored by Giacomo Tachis, the famous Italian winemaker.

A winning combination that has given birth to a wide range of award-winning wines. Recently, Castellare’s flagship wine I Sodi di S. Niccolò has been included by Wine Spectator-OperaWine 2021 among the 34 best wineries in Italy that “produce world-class wines; they are leaders in their regions; and witness the diversity, heritage and authenticity that are the hallmarks of Italian wine”

Castellare di Castellina's vineyard spreads over 33 hectares on the hillsides of a natural southeast-facing amphitheater, at an average height of 370 meters above sea level. Here, the production philosophy is based on tradition, innovation and respect for the environment. Castellare di Castellina I Sodi di S. Niccolò, is one of the few Italian Supertuscans made exclusively with native vines: 85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera. On the label, the iconic bird, always present on the red wines of Castellare, is a symbol of the daily commitment to sustainable viticulture that the winery has been carrying out for over 40 years.

The 2020 vintage

In 2020 the winter in Castellina in Chianti, in the Chianti Classico area, was rather mild, with a consequent early budding, followed by a rather cool spring which guaranteed a correct growing of the plants. The summer was on average hot but without excessive temperature peaks, with sporadic rains which contributed to a beneficial reduction in temperatures, mainly in the month of September

Tasting notes

“I Sodi di S. Niccolò 2020 is characterized by a great olfactory intensity and a dense and elegant texture of sweet and silky tannins. The acidity of Sangioveto gives to the wine great freshness and makes the sip particularly pleasant and crunchy, with a long and highly persistent finish. Ready immediately and, at the same time, suitable for a very long aging."
Alessandro Cellai, winemaker

N°35 TOP 100 WINE SPECTATOR

Packed with ripe, juicy cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and floral aromas and flavors, this red is supple and beautifully integrated. Earth, iron and tobacco accents add detail as this winds down on the lazy, resonant aftertaste, showing terrific energy. Sangioveto and Malvasia Nera. Best from 2026 through 2043. 5,000 cases made, 800 cases imported.

The 2020 I Sodi di San Niccolò is fabulous. It is a rare wine that offers power, finesse and translucent energy at once. All the elements are in perfect balance. I can’t remember a Sodi like this one, a wine that is so complete and alluring right out of the gate. Rose petal, lavender, spice, orange peel and sage open first. What impresses me most about the 2020 is the finesse of its tannin, something I have very rarely seen in Sodi at this early stage. Magical. This is remarkable in every way.

Deep and dark aromas of Mediterranean herbs, restrained black cherries and stern, earthy complexity. Firm on the palate, with a full body, velvety tannins. crisp acidity and a chalky finish. Long, toasted graphite aftertaste. Sangiovese and malvasia nera. A wine intended for the long haul, yet ready to drink in a year or two.

N°58 TOP 100 VINOUS

AG: Sodi di San Niccolò, Castellare’s Sangioveto/Malvasia Nera flagship, is one of the hidden gems in Tuscany. Over the years and decades, Sodi has established a brilliant track record for aging. The 2020 is a brilliant effort from proprietor Paolo Panerai and longtime winemaker Alessandro Cellai.”

Lovely. Dark and lighter cherry fruit, quite intensely so. A pleasing natural sucrosity immediately evident aromatically. Candlewax. Acacia. Sandalwood perhaps. Impressively spice-light and pure. Vibrant, cool and dark in its fruit profile in the mouth with great purity. A little espresso note. A touch of pleasing austerity. Fresh and more glistening in its clarity on the palate than the more substantial and perhaps more age-worthy 2019 but I prefer this. Vivid. Natural. Energetic. And likely to represent super value.

Aromatic white pepper, dried roses, sage and bay leaf spices, you are taken right into the heart of Tuscany. Elegant, structured, raspberry, pomegranate and redcurrant fruits, savoury and mouthwateringly dry, rippled with savoury aromatics of black tea, tobacco and underbrush. Alessandro Cellai winemaker, 66% new oak, 10 months in bottle after barrel ageing. Such a fan of this wine, just built to be shared.

A delicate combination of aniseed and exotic spices with fragrant floral scents and ripe red berry fruit. Smells really quite individual, a touch of vanilla and caramel about this too. Clean, supple and alive, this has character from the get go, juicy and precise, thrilling acidity joins massy but fine tannins that give this a buzzy, lifted but filling expression from the get go. Everything is at the fore, and carries the intensity to a long finish. Upfront and so intense, but refined and purposeful. It feels effortless as much as it does intense which is quite a feat. Joyful and with complexity. Too young now but give this a few years at least. I love the graphite and wet stone chalkiness on the finish too.
