Castellare di Castellina - I Sodi di San Niccolo - Toscana IGT 2019

Castellare di Castellina I Sodi S. Niccolò, a historic Supertuscan

The Domini Castellare di Castellina group was created at the end of the 70s by Paolo Panerai and includes today four prestigious wineries such as the historic Castellare di Castellina in Chianti and Rocca di Frassinello, a joint-venture with Château Lafite Rothschild. All the wineries are supervised by Alessandro Cellai who was mentored by Giacomo Tachis, the famous Italian winemaker.

A winning combination that has given birth to a wide range of award-winning wines. Recently, Castellare’s flagship wine I Sodi di S. Niccolò has been included by Wine Spectator-OperaWine 2021 among the 34 best wineries in Italy that “produce world-class wines; they are leaders in their regions; and witness the diversity, heritage and authenticity that are the hallmarks of Italian wine”

Castellare di Castellina's vineyard spreads over 33 hectares on the hillsides of a natural southeast-facing amphitheater, at an average height of 370 meters above sea level. Here, the production philosophy is based on tradition, innovation and respect for the environment. Castellare di Castellina I Sodi di S. Niccolò, is one of the few Italian Supertuscans made exclusively with native vines: 85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera. On the label, the iconic bird, always present on the red wines of Castellare, is a symbol of the daily commitment to sustainable viticulture that the winery has been carrying out for over 40 years.

The 2019 vintage

The 2019 vintage, despite initial concerns due to the highly variable climate, has turned out to be one of the best in recent years.

“I Sodi di S. Niccolò 2019 is characterized by a great olfactory intensity and a dense and elegant texture of sweet and silky ta nnins. The acidity of Sangioveto gives great freshness and makes the sip particularly pleasant and crunchy, with a long finish and great persistence. Ready to drink now but also suitable for a very long aging”. Awards Alessandro Cellai, winemaker

Complex and deeply embedded aromas of ripe blackberries, spices and aromatic bark. Full-bodied and very firm for now, with impressive concentration of fruit and tannin. Very long, balanced finish. Great to taste now, but this is one for the cellar. Patience will be rewarded. Sangiovese and malvasia nera. This has always been a top Tuscan red. Best from 2027.

This is a long-celebrated blend of 85% Sangioveto (another name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from one of the headline estates of Castellina in Chianti. The Castellare di Castellina 2019 I Sodi di S. Niccolò (with 55,000 bottles released) opens to soft texture and medium weight with dark aromas of blackcurrant and cherry. Those aromas show an earthy or savory side that comes through to the palate. The wine closes with sweet tannins, and this vintage boasts a solid build overall.

The 2019 I Sodi di San Niccolò is another fabulous wine from Castellare. At this stage, the 2019 is an infant. The purity of the fruit is compelling. Despite its considerable intensity, the 2019 appears to have less forbidding tannins than in many years, which should allow it to drink well with minimal cellaring. Blood orange, sweet spice, leather and cedar linger on the stylish finish.

Super fragranced nose, patchouli, pot pourri, Turkish Delight, rose with caramelised red berries and a touch of smoke and incense - all quiet forward and expressive. The nose alone you could smell for hours such is its complexity and beguiling nature. Powerful and concentrated on the palate, this is broad and muscular, sinewy with depth and determination. Tannins are well integrated, really giving the support to the fruit and acidity, driving the flavours forward despite the clear weight and hold. Fragranced red berries continue on the palate with a touch of stone, graphite and matchstick. Rich and big on the mid palate, becoming more focussed towards the finish. Cleary well made with lots going on. Acidity is great, it's cool, clean, sleek and packed full of flavour. Almost too much, this is a big wine, so needs time, but has lots of appeal and mouthwatering freshness throughout. Released on the 9th March. Director and winemaker Alessandro Cellai.

The top wine from Castellare di Castellina (though I love their Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale too) and a super-subtle Tuscan that has been on great form in recent vintages. This is ethereal and undoubtedly the best vintage of this wine that I have yet to taste. Pretty; aerial; expressively floral – with roses, patchouli and candle wax, Turkish delight, incense, myrrh, cinders and cordite. Black cherry fruit, black tea leaf and dark cedary notes complete the sensory kaleidoscope. Limpid and diaphanous but substantial, dense and compact and with an impressive sense of forward momentum across the palate. This has a lovely fluid, fresh finish where one finds complex mineral and crushed stone elements. A fabulous wine and likely to represent excellent value

Captures interest from the first nose, skewers you in place with its flavoursome pomegrante, raspberry, orange peel, lemongrass, rose, slate. There is a smoke, tar edge from the oak but it is matched step by step with vibrant fruit and mouthwatering freshness. 66% new oak, 10 months in bottle after barrel ageing before release; 33ha, winemaker Alessandro Cellai.
