Cantemerle - Haut-Médoc 2021

The estate - A charming classified growth

Located in the southern part of the Bordeaux Medoc peninsula, Château Cantemerle, Grand Cru Classé in 1855n has deep gravel soil. Thanks to its unique terroir, Cantemerle produces complex, well-balanced and refined wines.
After belonging to the Villeneuve (1579-1892) and Dubos (1892-1980) families, the château was acquired in 1981 by SMA Group, a large mutual insurance company in the construction and civil engineering sector. The estate's long history is reflected in the château's distinctive architecture and the magnificent grounds that surround it. Cantemerle exudes rimantic charm and its wine has a magical feel to it!

2021 - A vintage of terroir

2021 is different from the sun-drenched trilogy of vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020. It is a vintage of terroir, in a more classic style, produced from a growing season made complicated by the vagaries of the climate and high vine disease pressure.
The tireless work put in by the whole team, the meticulous knowledge of the vineyard, and the estate’s warmish sandy-gravel soils enabled, despite challenging conditions, the harvesting of grapes that were phenolically fully ripe and in very good health.

Tasting Notes - "Balanced and full of energy"

“Cantemerle is very comfortable with this type of vintage. The estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon shows great breed and soul and brings excellent tension to the wine. It provides the wine’s backbone. Both digestible and complex, 2021 is balanced and full of energy and characterised by its length of flavour.” Eric Boissenot, consultant winemaker.

Attractive herb and capsicum notes lend freshness to the red currants and plums. Medium body on the palate with a very fluid center palate. Crunchy, elegant and juicy finish with good length. Has plenty of appeal now. Drink now.

The 2021 Château Cantemerle is good, and certainly an impressive Haut-Medoc. Offering ample red and black fruits, tobacco-laced herbs, and cedar, it's medium-bodied, forward, has ripe yet crunchy tannins, and a good finish.

The 2021 Château Cantemerle checks in as 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest 5% Petit Verdot that was raised for 12 months in French oak (40% new). It's a juicy, medium-bodied, more red-fruited effort that has some classic tobacco and underbrush notes, juicy yet integrated acidity, fine tannins, and a good finish. It's a satisfying, enjoyable, well-made Haut-Médoc that will drink nicely for a decade if well stored.

The 2021 Cantemerle is floral, lifted and very pretty. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, spice, mocha and licorice take shape in a wine that impresses with its delineated, persistent personality. All the elements are nicely balanced. There is a bit of tightness on the finish, but overall, this is nicely done.

The 2021 Cantemerle opens in the glass with notes of cassis, dark berries, mint and baking chocolate. This is medium-bodied, with supple, powdery tannins, lively acids and a delicate core of fruit, concluding with a minty, somewhat herbaceous finish.

An old-school version, with a cedary thread that runs from start to finish, along with savory tobacco leaf and dried currant fruit accents. A touch austere on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2033. 25,000 cases made.  –JM

This wine comes from one of the first of the grand estates when driving north up the Médoc. The wine brings out the brightness of the vintage as well as its structure and potential for aging. This is balanced, fruit and tannins allied with succulent acidity. Drink from 2027.

Strongly perfumed, smells strongly of Petit Verdot. Quite high acidity, sharp and tangy straight away, prominent acidity which is mouthwatering, then settles and turns a bit creamy and chalky towards the finish. Ends a little bit bitter. Calm, not shouting, and missing a bit more push and sense of juiciness, a little serious right now but this should round out nicely and provide lots of short-to-mid-term drinking pleasure.

Rather forceful and strident with some sourness and astringency on the finish but, having said this, the fruit seems accurate and pure, and the perfume is enjoyable. There is more to come here as this wine evolves, so cross your fingers, but this might work out rather nicely given five years. 16.5

Savory, with mushrooms, bark and dried leaves. Some cocoa and walnut notes, too. Medium body with lightly chewy tannins. A little loose.

Très joli coup de nez floral, ensemble distingué, subtil, raffiné dans son tannin, déjà harmonieux. Une vraie réussite pour un prix qui restera des plus raisonnables.

Medium-deep crimson. Unforced and fragrant raspberry, blackcurrant, hint strawberry aromas with vanilla cedar notes. Fresh raspberry, redcurrant, cassis fruits, fine plentiful chalky tannins and attractive toasty vanilla oak complexity. Finishes cedary firm and minerally. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 9% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot. 12 months in 40% new French oak, 13% alc

Violets blooming in the glass, sweet juicy liquid flowing on my tongue, these are all the elements for me to know Cantemerle 2021 is a success. With the help of the early-ripening terroir, it not only succeeds in maintaining a good level of ripeness in 2021, but also manifesting its signature roundness. Even with a slightly tense finish, it does present an overall balanced structure. A noteworthy tasting experience. ????????????????,???????????????,????Cantemerle 2021???????????????,???????2021?????????,???????????????????????????,???????????????????????

Bright, crisp, fresh, juicy and focused on its red currant nose. Medium-bodied, savory, with soft, minty edge to the bright, red fruits on the palate, you can drink this on the young side. The wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2024-2042. 90-92

The 2021 Cantemerle has a pleasant, cedar-inspired bouquet, the light black fruit gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and quite structured, revealing classic tobacco notes toward a finish of decent length. This will do fine as an early-drinking claret.

Rubinrot.

The 2021 Cantemerle is a very strong effort in a challenging year, offering up aromas of blackcurrants and plums mingled with hints of spice box, black truffle and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming, it's supple and succulent, with a generous core of fruit and a saline finish. It's sure to number among the sleepers of the vintage.
