CANON PÉCRESSE 2020: AN INTENSE FIRST ORGANIC VINTAGE
by Jean-Francis Pécresse
37.2°C in the afternoon. Or not far off... On 17 September 2020, when we started
picking the young Merlot of Canon Pécresse, on this limestone plateau which had
been reflecting the sun’s rays since morning, the thermometer went over 35 degrees in the afternoon. Unheard of in the forty-year memory of a grape picker... To preserve the quality of the grapes - and the health of the pickers – the harvest had to be suspended and started later “in the cool”. Even in 2003, a heatwave year, when we also started the harvest on 17 September, it wasn’t that hot...
These high temperatures, peaking at 40 degrees in August, marked out 2020.
Fortunately, they did not leave their mark on this vintage of Canon Pécresse. Started ten years ago now, with the arrival of Stéphane Derenoncourt as consultant to the estate, working the soil has allowed the vines, with their deep root network, to find the water and nutrients they need. They therefore stood up admirably to the water stress, without any blockage of ripening. With a complete absence of rainfall in July, the vineyard also benefited from a few providential storms in mid-August, which restarted the ripening process.
The most difficult thing in 2020 was resisting the pressure - both symptomatic and psychological! - of downy mildew, favoured as rarely before by the rain that fell in abundance between mid-April and mid-June. It required extreme vigilance, being ready to respond to any alert. In the end, the intensity and frequency of attacks remained very low, with less than 4% impact from mildew, at the end of the growth cycle, across the entire vineyard. Proof here again that well-balanced plants have better capacity to resist.
It is sometimes said that early vintages are the easiest. 2020 proves just the opposite.
It was a gruelling season with important stakes: after three years of conversion,
Canon Pécresse was preparing its first application for organic certification (with
Ecocert). When it came, this 2020 exceeded expectations. This young wine has an
unprecedented aromatic radiance, a purity of expression, an intensity too, which are certainly attributable to the years of organic work in the vineyard. The wine has got more volume and precision on the mid-palate.
This 2020 is both a culmination and a beginning. The culmination of an approach
carried out with conviction in favour of living soils. The beginning of a journey towards greater harmony between nature and the people who cultivate it.

A blend of 89% Cabernet Franc and 11% Merlot that is produced from vines on one of the highest limestone plateaus of the appellation, the 2020 Canon Pécresse reveals scents of spring flowers, graphite, cassis, blueberry and a touch of spices with aeration in the glass. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied, lively and fresh, with racy acidity and a long, saline, penetrating finish. It will offer a broad drinking window.

Readers looking for a pure, mineral-laced Right Bank in the vintage will love the 2020 Château Canon Pecresse, which is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from the upper limestone plateau that was raised in just one-third new French oak. It has a great nose of ripe raspberries, spring flowers, sappy herbs, and a salty, chalky mineral character that emerges more on the palate. Medium-bodied, focused, and straight, with ripe tannins, it's very much in the classic, balanced, yet impressive style of the vintage. It will keep for a solid decade.

Mint leaf, espresso, licorice, cocoa and dark cherries shine with ease on the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, round, soft and polished, with ample sweetness to the juicy, lush, ripe plums, with their peppery edge in the chocolate tinted finish. Drink from 2023-2037.

Slightly reductive in the sensory profile alternating notes of black prunes, blackberries, camphor, mandarin peel and cloves. Full bodied, smoothed tannins of good craftsmanship and a tasty, serious finish which needs a few years to distend. Better from 2025.

The 2020 Canon Pécresse is a rich, heady Fronsac. It offers up an exotic mix of blackberry jam, cloves, licorice, menthol and chocolate. Big, bold and explosive, Canon Pécresse is not exactly subtle, but it sure is tasty.

The 2020 Canon Pécresse was showing a bit of reduction on the nose that made it difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, fine backbone, quite solid with plenty of substance, though it does miss a bit of finesse on the finish.

Blueberries, ripe blackberries, hot chocolate and rosemary on the nose. From organically grown grapes. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Solid and a little rustic. Merlot and cabernet franc. Better in 2025.

The 2020 Canon Pécresse is packed with dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, licorice, espresso and cloves. Inky and concentrated, the Canon Fronsac offers plenty of punch. There is a good deal of potential here, but not exactly much subtlety.

The 2020 Canon Pécresse is ripe and flashy on the nose of precocious black cherry and blueberry fruit, though it needs more definition and feels a little monotone. The palate is toasty on the entry and smooth in texture, with moderate depth, but again, it says more about the winemaking than the terroir on the finish.

Medium-bodied with a showy nose of cocoa, licorice, smoke, espresso and sweet, ripe, cherries the wine is soft, forward, lush and creamy. You can enjoy this on release and over the next decade. 88-89

Sporting a deep purple-black color, the 2020 Canon Pécresse sashays out of the glass with compelling notes of crushed blackberries and black cherries, leading to hints of fallen leaves, prunes and Chinese five spice. The medium to full-bodied palate is densely packed with black fruit preserves and plenty of bright berry sparks, framed by soft, rounded tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and spicy. Impressive!

A very solid red with blackberry and purple fruit, as well as some ink and stone undertones. Full-to medium-bodied with a creamy and firm tannin texture.

Good structure with forward motion - this has juice and black fruits. It picks up speed as it goes and then slows down with limestone slate and salinity on the close of play giving an enjoyable sense of pace. Harvest began September 17 under 37°C temperatures (hotter even than the same day when they began in 2003). Stéphane Derenoncourt consultant. First vintage certified organic with Ecocert. Owned by Jean-Francis Pécresse, director of Radio Classique and journalist at Les Échos.
