Camensac - Haut-Médoc 2021

Etymologically Camensac means the path leading to the water in the old “gascon” dialect. Indeed the people of Saint-Laurent and those in the vicinity, would go to the “jales” either to get some water, or to board a boat bound to the big river. The Charterhouse dates from the 18th century. An old house had to be demolished so as to build the Charterhouse. The maps drawn by Cassini and  Belleyme, both 18th century cartographers, inevitably refer to a rather large house.

Back in 1904 a family of wholesalers hailing from the north of France, the Cuveliers, bought this Grand Cu Classé in 1855. Then in 1964, they sold it the a spanish family from Rioja, the Forners, who were quite interested in Bordeaux.

Eventually in 2005, Jean Merlaut the uncle and his niece Céline Villars-Foubet, took over. The aim was to give back its sheen and prestigious image to the estate, which notoriety suffered as a result of its absence from the export markets. The assets are now gathered so that nothing will be left to chance to achieve their aim: a land and a savoirfaire understood and identified in the wine they are respectively taking care of: Gruaud-Larose and ChasseSpleen.

Tasting notes - 2021 vintage

First, the nose is a bouquet of fresh rose, blackberry jelly. Then gun stone, fireplace, and still floral.
Vivid attack, satin structure, a very nice grain. Ample and patterned volume. Saline touch. Very black cherry long finish.

The 2021 Camensac opens in the glass with notes of dark berries and cherries mingled with scents of cigar wrapper and pen ink. It is medium-bodied, with a fleshy attack that segues into a somewhat firm, angular palate that displays a touch less plenitude that I perceived from barrel.

Bright, vibrant nose but has some good depth, too. Plenty of cherries, raspberries and a touch of fresh herbs with white pepper, pencil shavings and spices. Medium body on the palate with tight, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant finish. Engagingly fresh and long. 66% cabernet sauvignon and 34% merlot. Very well-crafted. Better from 2025.

Ripe and solidly built, with warmed cassis and singed vanilla nicely melded against a backdrop of sandalwood and potpourri. Shows light chalky minerality that lingers on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2030. 17,776 cases made.  –JM

Pretty raspberry, currant and spice-box character with some orange zest. Tight, lightly grainy tannins. Medium-bodied and juicy.

Deep crimson. Fragrant herb graphite, red and black cherry aromas with iodine notes. Richly flavoured wine with abundant dark berry fruits, fine lacy dry tannins and underlying cedar complexity. Finishes grainy firm and minerally. 66% cabernet sauvignon, 34% merlot. 18 months in 40% new French oak. 13% alc

The 2021 de Camensac is a little distant on the nose and, despite coaxing, doesn't really offer much compared to, say, the Cantemerle. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, fine depth, plenty of licorice-infused black fruit and a slightly high-toned but short finish.

Helles Rubinrot. Duftige, parfümierte Nase, etwas Cola, rote Frucht.

A fine effort, the 2021 Camensac offers up aromas of cassis, plums, loamy soil and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium-bodied, velvety palate with lively acids and impressively refined tannins. Between 2007 and 2017, more than a quarter of this 90-hectare estate was replanted, replacing Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon at 10,000 vines per hectare on the best gravel soils, and as those results start to bear fruit, Camensac's upward trajectory trumps vintage variation.
