Despite the high temperatures and drought of 2022, the typically gentle Château Calon Ségur unexpectedly exhibited a more grounded demeanor, with higher tannins than in any previous vintages. Tasting this wine, I am greeted with soft berry fragrances, velvety tannins, and a classic, flourishing image. Though the 2022 vintage may not flaunt the radiant floral and fruity exuberance of 2020, and with a touch of warmth, it remains a graceful expression of the estate’s signature gentle maidenly charm.

Slate and chalk textured tannins, skilful work over ageing to ensure a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon. The intensity and concentration are seductive and you can expect plenty of black chocolate, espresso, cocoa bean, liquorice, crème de cassis, seriously enjoyable, clear ageing ability. 100% new oak in the cellars. 28hl/h yield, following hail. Harvest September 6 through to 27.

The flagship 2022 Château Calon Ségur checks in as 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It's a massive wine from this château that brings a fabulous nose of darker currants, smoked tobacco, chocolaty oak, graphite, and loamy earth. This full-bodied, deep, unctuous Saint-Estèphe has a round, layered mouthfeel, remarkably pure tannins, and flawless overall balance. It's going to take a decade to shed its baby fat, but this is legit sensational juice! Don’t miss it.

La profondeur affichée par le bouquet de Calon Ségur en dit long sur les ambitions de ce cru. Certes, l'élevage est présent, mais il n'est guère dominant. Il cède d'ailleurs rapidement la scène à des nuances fruitées, épicées et minérales grâce à des parfums de sureau, de myrtilles, d'épices douces et de cèdre. En bouche, le vin commence par afficher sa largeur, son ampleur. Il prépare le terrain, peut-être avec un peu trop de charme, mais il cherche probablement à canaliser l'incroyable puissance que la structure tannique apporte avec elle ! Le vin ne manque pas d'également souligner sa fraîcheur, son aptitude à créer l'harmonie dans un contexte vigoureux. C'est pour ma part une des plus grandes réussites de Calon Ségur à ce jour. On n'est plus très loin du Graal. Ça viendra, j'en suis convaincu. 2027-2047 98/100

The 2022 Calon Ségur is a wine that I found "uncompromising" when I tasted it at en primeur. Now that the wine is in bottle, it has a strident bouquet that marches from the glass with blackcurrant, bilberry, cedar and pine aromas. It’s very well defined and quite classic in style with finely chiseled tannins. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and a little more saline than it showed out of barrel. Indeed, it has a tad more elegance now, though it still harks back to some of the classic postwar wines that I tasted in the past—in a good way. Very fresh on the finish, this is a sophisticated Saint-Estèphe born to give years of drinking pleasure, but my word, give it at least a decade before entertaining the idea of opening a bottle.

Stunning depth and minerality with fine spices, dark olives, ashtray and a hint of white pepper, paprika and iron. Powerful but also really fine, complex and classy, with full body and super-fine-grained tannins. Spot-on balance helps highlight depth and layers. Really long and restrained. Very complete. Already appealing but will improve in the next decade. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Calon Ségur is a young, raw powerhouse with huge tannins. Today, I find the 2022 impenetrably compact and hard to read. Then again, Calon Ségur was quite similar _en primeur_, so I can't say I am terribly surprised. For the time being, the 2022 is somewhat of a mystery.

A steady stream of cassis, dark plum and black cherry preserves seamlessly melds with lilac, licorice, alder and chestnut notes. Keeps a sleek, polished edge through the lengthy finish, while a subtle tug of earth provides a nice counterpoint. Captures the essence of the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2045. 7,083 cases made.
