Caiarossa (BIO-ORGANIC) - Toscana IGT 2021

Caiarossa: A Unique Blend

Caiarossa embodies the essence of the winery, crafted from a unique blend of seven red grape varieties that reflect the estate's identity and the complexity of its terroir.

Managed according to Biodynamic and Organic principles since 1998, Caiarossa joined the Albada Jelgersma family in 2004, owners of Château Giscours in Margaux, Bordeaux. The estate covers 110 hectares, with 31 hectares of vines across 47 parcels, each carefully adapted to variations in soil, altitude, and exposure. The remaining land features Mediterranean scrub and 500 olive trees.

Inspired by Feng Shui, the winery's design influences its shape, orientation, materials, and colors. Since 2016, Caiarossa has been part of the Toscana Wine Architecture project, linking 14 Tuscan wineries recognized for their unique architectural significance.

The 2021 Vintage:

The 2021 vintage experienced particularly varied and demanding climatic conditions, with very low rainfall throughout the year. Winter was marked by sub-zero temperatures in February. March, on the other hand, was dry, with above-average maximum temperatures, accelerating the budding of the vines.

After a rather cool and rainy spring, the arrival of a high-pressure system at the end of May stabilized the weather, ensuring dry conditions until the end of August. September brought warm and sunny days, allowing us to harvest grapes at optimal phenolic ripeness characterized by remarkably soft and silky tannins.

The 2021 Caiarossa is an elegant, sophisticated red. Crushed flowers, spice, blood orange and pomegranate open first. Pliant and medium in body, with terrific energy, the 2021 has much to offer. It’s energy and overall persistence are notable. Bright saline notes support the vibrant finish.

The nose is elegant, precise, nicely racy and offers a fine infusion side as well as a beautiful precise and stretched grain. It reveals notes of ripe/dense wild red berries, pepper and small notes of violet, local grove associated with touches of tonka bean, delicate hints of sweet spices as well as fine hints of crushed strawberry as well as a discreet hint of nutmeg, infusion and an imperceptible iodine hint (in the background). The palate is beautifully structured, tangy, nicely stretched and offers freshness, gourmandise, precision, tension, an acidulous frame, a certain density in controle/balance, a nice grain, a nice creaminess in freshness as well as a good definition. On the palate this wine expresses notes of wild raspberry, pulpy/juicy wild strawberry and small notes of bright/juicy purple plum associated with touches of bright small fruits, hints of cornflower, star anise, black olive as well as fine hints of racy minerality and a subtle hint of toasted almond. Tannins are mellow and gourmands. Long and beautiful persistence. A subtle chewiness on the finish.

Dense and concentrated, this red is packed with black currant, blackberry and plum fruit, while iron, wild herb and oak spice notes add detail. Assertive tannins and vibrant acidity provide support, bringing a sense of equilibrium overall. There's fine depth to the dark fruit flavors, plus a terrific aftertaste that really persists. Shows power and grace. Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Grenache. Best from 2027 through 2045. —B.S.

This is a vintage that shows the successful evolution in this wine, with generous brambled raspberry, pomegranate, rosemary, underbrush, olive, anis, cocoa and grilled rosemary. There is intensity to the flavours, plenty of Tuscan sunshine, with excellent integration of the tannins, and a bounce of fresh acidities. Jerome Poisson as winemaker, AJ Domaines owner. Harvest September 2 to 21. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consultants.

Being the technical team at Caiarossa must be particularly enjoyable. Every year, they have to find the “golden ratio” between Bordeaux and Mediterranean varietals, highlighting Tuscan red passion while maintaining Bordeaux elegance. The winemaking team shared that the 2021 vintage had reduced yields due to drought (dry but not particularly hot). Typically, dry years result in concentrated wines; however, this wine reveals a composed character, fine tannins, and a relaxed gracefulness, which is truly satisfying. Following the exceptional 2019 and 2020 vintages, Caiarossa has once again demonstrated the perfect encounter between top-tier winemaking skills and the Tuscan hillside terroir in 2021. I believe this wine will become even more impressive with 8-12 years of aging.

Spicy and quite saline. You really notice the Sangiovese here (even at 10 per cent). Baked and fresh plums, damsons, a little cherry and perhaps loganberry too. There’s an impressive degree of fruit complexity. Limpid and sapid in the mouth. Fluid and dynamic, with slightly prickly tannins on the finish, but they just need time. Well-made and impressively chiselled and structured. Substantial. Imposing. Quite a proposition and I think the strongest Caiarossa I have yet tasted!

Purplish tinge in the glass. Aromas of cloves, generous bramble fruit and dried eucalyptus. The attack is firm and dense, with a full body and velvety tannins of great extraction on the mid-palate and refreshing natural acidity. Good integration of oak at the end. Potential for the long haul, but drinkable in one to two years.
