Ao Yun - Chine 2022

ALSO AVAILABLE IN BAMBOO OWC1 : 198 EUR

AO YUN, AN EPIC JOURNEY

Ao Yun, the first wine estate of the Himalayas, is born from a dream that began in 2008: to create a unique, world-class fine wine in China. Commissioned by Moët Hennessy, Dr.Tony Jordan embarked on a journey into the unknown and after 4 years of scouring the vast terrain of China he eventually made it to North Yunnan, where he observed an ideal microclimate for a fine cabernet. With each vintage, the Ao Yun team, led by Estate & Technical Director Maxence Dulou, perpetuates this vision.

Ao Yun lies near the legendary and remote village of Shangri-La, in the foothills of the Himalayas. Ao Yun’s vineyards are on the banks of the Mekong River, in the UNESCO-protected area of the Three Parallel Rivers and below the sacred Meili snow mountain (6800m). Each of the 4 villages is spread over complementary altitudes from 2100m to 2600m and has different soils, sun exposure and microclimates.

The 2022 vintage:

The best conditions so far with evenly distributed rainfall and generous sunshine, reminding the memorable 2020, yet with an even better first half of the year. This resulted in homogeneous growth and our most qualitative harvest to date: 62% went into Ao Yun, the highest percentage so far.

Tasting notes

Glossy, intense ruby garnet hue. Restrained yet enticing aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, cocoa, eucalyptus and subtle rose with a marked freshness. The palate reveals a complex tapestry of ethereal fruit seamlessly integrated with fine-grained tannins, making it approchable even in its youth. Remarkable depth and intensity walking on a tight rope of splendid acidity create a sense of both power and finesse. Seemingly endless finish with an endearing saline note which naturally invites a second sip.

Glorious. Deep dark black cherries, bulby floral elements, a little Szechuan and rose peppercorn, blueberries, mulberries and brambles. All pure and crunchy and essential. Loads of graphite too and a hint of cedar. Sandalwood. This feels quite solaire for Au Yun and there’s quite a lot of liquorice. It’s lovely and very pure, but a wine that’s a little less accessible at this stage than previous vintages. But it does retain a remarkable freshness. Quite saline on the finish, and with it a little game. All the elements are present and although integrated one senses the final form of that integration is still to come. This needs time and will reward it.

This is a more refined, pristine Ao Yun with spot-on balance and suppleness. In a way, this is more confidently stripped-down and less decorated than the in past, with higher merlot presence than usual, offering a bit more flesh and roundness with a bit less density and power. Still quite deep on the nose, with attractive notes from paprika and ash tray to deep, red and black plums, currants and hints of incense, spice and cedar. Almost full-bodied, but not as dense and opulent or concentrated as before, with an abundance of fine, dusty tannins and a lasting but understated finish, slowly growing at the end. First year without the inclusion of press wine, with more glass jars used during aging. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot, 14% cabernet franc, 7% syrah and 7% petit verdot. This can be approached relatively earlier. Drink from 2027.

"[…] In tasting, I can clearly sense the wine’s del iberate pursuit of elegance and
purity. Compared with previous vintages that often approached 15% alcohol,
the 2022 vintage stands at 14%, and with as much as 60% aged in stoneware
and glass jar, these choices unmistakably signal the winemaker’s intention to
shape a palate that feel s more open and transparent. At the same time, it
should be emphasized that Ao Yun 2022 in its youth shows a pronounced
reductive character. The tannins sti l l show a gentle edge, and the framing of
new oak feel s understated rather than embracing. Patience is essential ; the
wine requires at least three hours of decanting to ful ly reveal its depth."

Earthy, savoury notes on the nose, I always find this wine so expressive and unique in terms of aromatics. A little shy and subdued compared to more recent quite impressive vintages. Tannins are fine and filling, there's lovely purity to the fruit with concentration to - smoke, peppercorns, flint, cedar as well as mouthwatering blueberry and cranberry fruit. This has tannin finesse, depth, roundness and fresh acidity yet this still feels a touch closed at this point. I love the chalky and mineral elements, graphite, liquorice and wet stones. This still needs some time to fully harmonise but there's great potential. 7% Syrah and 7% Petit Verdot complete the blend.

Love this wine, and love how it keeps telling its story of a mountain wine with fragrant fresh herbs and succulent black fruits that slowly unroll in the glass. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah stand out in the glass, spiralling outwards and upwards with cold ash, freshly cut herbs, cassis, blueberry and cranberry fruits. Steel and gunsmoke reduction evident on the opening, give this time in the glass or a few more years in bottle. One of the most 'European' vintages since the launch of the wine, in terms of rain in spring and dry in summer. Maxence Dulou winemaker, with 131 families farming the 31ha of vines across 773 sub-plots (yes, you read that right) set at 2,100-2,600m. 23hl/h yield.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Ao Yun bursts with bold notions of baked plums, crème de cassis, and chargrill, followed by hints of sautéed herbs, new leather, and fallen leaves. The medium-bodied palate is filled with savory-laced black-fruit flavors, supported by soft tannins and a racy line, finishing long and earthy. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 14% Cabernet Franc, with splashes of Syrah and Petit Verdot.
