Borgogno – Barolo Cannubi Riserva - Barolo Ac. 2020
Borgogno, located in the very heart of Barolo, represents the historical memory of the Langa and its great wines. For generations it is the loyal interpreter of a territory and heritage which are made up of unique values and knowledge, but always with an eye to the future. As the inscription in the centre of the wine cellar proudly declares:
“Nothing is immortal, except for a wine that is conceived in a slow, methodical, thrifty and stubborn manner. This is what we’ve been doing since 1761”.
Of Borgogno’s total vineyard holdings of 40 hectares, 16 are located in the municipality of Barolo. These are divided between 5 historical vineyards: Liste, Fossati, Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo and San Pietro delle Viole.
Cannubi is the most famous cru, in the heart of the municipality of Barolo and the denomination, and it was mentioned in historical documents already in the 19th century, even before the birth of Barolo itself. It has an excellent terroir complexity, an extraordinary wealth of microelements and a favourable climate, which make this hill one of the most suitable ones in the world for grape cultivation. Borgogno has 1.30 hectares of vines with a southern exposure and an altitude ranging from 290 to 320 meters a.s.l., making an elegant and powerful Barolo.
The 2020 vintage:
Winter 2020 began with mild weather, gentle temperatures, and little rainfall. The spring was relatively dry and warm, promoting uniform vegetative growth from late February to mid-March, followed by a similarly mild April. These conditions initially suggested an early vintage, but May, unstable and rainy until late June, slowed growth while providing a crucial water reserve for the summer. The season that followed was favorable, with no hail or extreme weather, allowing the vines to avoid water stress. In September, grape ripening resumed rapidly, and the day-to-night temperature variation at the end of September and early October ensured grapes with optimal ripeness and balanced acidity, resulting in an outstanding vintage.
Tasting notes:
Intense ruby red with violet highlights. This Barolo recalls hints of red fruits and pepper. Full body wine, with a pleasant acidity and savouriness, silky tannin. A wine that represents the synthesis of elegance and structure.
