Beychevelle - Saint-Julien 2021

Beychevelle, land of wines and legends

Just like great wines, legends invite dreams and release all kinds of emotions. From the origin of its name and emblem - created in tribute to its owner in the 17th century, the first Duke of Epernon, Grand Admiral of France - to the majestic 200-year-old cedar tree that stands at the entrance to the property and watches over the vines, to the historic representations at the property, of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, aka Molière; there is no shortage of legends at Beychevelle and they are the core of the identity of this 3rd Classified Growth in 1855.

For centuries, the lands of Beychevelle, which cover 250 ha, including 90 ha of vines, have been a profound and unlimited source of inspiration for the creation of the Grand Vin.

2021, a technical year that has given nice surprises!

Romain Ducolomb tells you about this vintage: https://bit.ly/ChateauBeychevelle2021

The words of this vintage: Rigour - Passion - Commitment - Generosity - Precision

Beychevelle 2021 is remarkable for its freshness and intensity.
The bouquet is an explosion of ripe red fruits: wild strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants. The palate is supported by a beautiful tannic structure, silky, powerful and complex, recalling the noble and elegant character of the great Saint-Julien wines.

From the southern edge of the appellation and a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Château Beychevelle sports a vivid purple hue to go with terrific aromatics of darker fruits, tobacco, roasted coffee, and loamy earth. This round, medium-bodied, plump, forward, yet undeniably delicious 2021 is going to drink nicely right out of the gate. Harvest here spanned from the September 27 to October 8, and the wine will spend 18 months in roughly 70% new French oak.

The 2021 Beychevelle is elegant, understated and classy. Medium in body and less overt than most recent years, the 2021 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. Dark-toned fruit, gravel, menthol, licorice, spice and new oak build nicely with a bit of time in the glass. This is incredibly harmonious.

The 2021 Beychevelle opens in the glass with notes of sweet berry compote, plums and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate with an unusually sweet core of fruit for the vintage, framed by plenty of chewy tannin, and concluding with a vanillin-inflected finish. 92+

This sports plum and black currant fruit, with touches of licorice root, applewood, savory and warm earth notes. Shows the vintage's austerity but offers a touch more fruit than most of its brethren. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030. 19,000 cases made.  –JM

Even though the Merlot percentage is slightly diminished in this vintage, there is a very generous red-fruited theme here. It gives Beychevelle a magical mid-palate that segues into a slightly minty, clean finish. Forward and open, there is a complex but gentle wine here that packs a lot of flavour into a slender, streamlined chassis. 17.5

Blueberry and some chocolate and berry character. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh, medium finish.

Deep crimson. Classic blackcurrant cedar vanilla aromas with star anise notes. Blackcurrant espresso, vanilla flavours, fine-grained almost crisp tannins and plentiful mineral notes. Finishes cedar firm. Very expressive wine with attractive density, volume and attack. 57% cabernet sauvignon, 38% merlot, 3% petit verdot, 2% cabernet franc. 18 months in roughly 60% new French oak. 13% alc

As the most graceful winery in Saint-Julien, Beychevelle gathered its composure in facing the challenges of the vintage of 2021. Both the mellow body and the freshy sweet taste deliver a sensation of a Ragdoll coddling you. The 70% new oak has left no detectable traces on the palate, nor is the 57% high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon noticeable (the proportion of Merlot is usually higher in the wine). The flowing, tender finish lingers on like a picturesque photo. It is definitely one of the extraordinary premium wines in 2021. ??Saint-Julien????????,Beychevelle???2021??????,????????????????????????????????????“??”?????????,???????70%??????,????????57%????(????????????)? ????????????????,???????????????

The nose starts off with dark currants, tobacco leaf, espresso, flowers, herbs and black cherries. Medium-bodied, sweet, soft and fresh, there is a peppery, spicy touch on the backend, along with a hint of refreshing spearmint that adds to the vibrant, sweet, red fruits in this classically styled wine. The wine blends 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV, pH 3.7, the harvest took place September 25 - October 11. The yields were 50 hectoliters with 54% of the harvest going into the Grand Vin. Drink from 2025-2050. 92-94

Silky and well textured fruits, with gentle build through the palate and a carefully constructed balance of raspberry and redcurrant fruit and fresh acidity that comes through in lemongrass and a raspy slate texture. Not easy to achieve this in 2021, will have needed careful sorting and plot by plot work in vineyard and cellar. The firm frame is a little austere, but there is finesse here, gentle campfire smoke.

The 2021 Beychevelle has a pleasant, light bouquet that needs coaxing from the glass, eventually offering blackberry, briar, peppermint and sage aromas. The oak here is neatly integrated, though it does not possess the dimension of the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a firm grip on the entry. The Cabernet Sauvignon is fully in the driving seat here, imparting quite intense blackberry and graphite notes. As with many Saint-Julien barrel samples, a Pauillac-like structure comes through. The licorice-tinged finish is fresh and focused. This is quite an endearing Beychevelle after the challenging growing season.

The 2021 Beychevelle is rich and sumptuous, but not quite as pushed in that direction as some recent vintages have been. Then again, that sort of opulence was simply not possible in 2021. Even so, the 2021 flows with dark blue/purplish fruit, incense, espresso, mocha, menthol and licorice. All the elements are so well balanced. The 2021 is a terrific Beychevelle with a bright future.

The 2021 Beychevelle is a strong effort, exhibiting aromas of sweet berries and plums mingled with cigar wrapper and fresh mint. Medium to full-bodied, bright and fine-boned, it's deep and layered, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a saline finish. This wine only improved over the five times I tasted it.
