Bel-Air 'Jean & Gabriel' - Lussac Saint-Emilion 2020

EXCLUSIVE TO CVBG

Chateau Bel-Air "Jean & Gabriel" is born from the desire to produce a wine of the Lussac Saint-Emilion appellation that equals the very best. In this perspective, with the help of Stephane Derenoncourt, five hectares of old vines located on the best terroirs (blue clay) of the estate were meticulously selected and vinified by the Roi family in order to produce the best wine possible.
We strongly believe that the 2020 vintage is most likekly the best and finest ever made.

Another terrific wine in the vintage, the 2020 Château Bel-Air Cuvée Jean & Gabriel checks in as equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc raised in one-third new French oak. Redcurrants, sandalwood, cherries, and leafy herbs all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a seamless, balanced mouthfeel and outstanding length. It's well worth seeking out and has 8-10 years of prime drinking ahead of it.

Lively and intense it immediately engages the taster. Notes of wild strawberries blend admirably with cherries, linden, lemon blossom, cut cedar and chopped lime. Full bodied, very extracted, biting tannins and a terse finale which shows a lot of tension from the new wood. Better from 2027.

Salty nose, Ripe and fleshy on the palate, but gentle, giving a nice frame and weight. Chalky but fresh with cool blue fruits and lovely underlying acidity. Some high-toned framing from the wood, a little bit of cinnamon and clove giving the angles. Will need a good airing.

Polished cassis and raspberry fruits, tempered by angular tannins that drop through the mid-palate. A 5ha property owned by Jean-Noël Roi.

Dark spices, blackberries, warm stones and hints of black vanilla, walnut and oyster sauce. Tannins are tight and chewy on the medium- to full-bodied palate and need some time to soften. Better in 2025 but already delicious.

The 2020 Cuvée Jean & Gabriel is packed with black cherry, cedar, tobacco, menthol, licorice and chocolate. The style is a bit pushed, but this has come together well in élevage. This cool site requires picking late and there is 50% Cabernet Franc in the blend, all of which requires a very delicate hand in the cellar. There is quite a bit of power and the tannins are burly, but it is a very good showing.

The 2020 Cuvée Jean Gabriel comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of blueberry pie, baked black plums and fruitcake, plus wafts of Indian spices and camphor. The full-bodied palate packs a wallop, featuring plenty of juicy black fruits and a soft texture, finishing with a minty lift.

Dark in color, the wine shows off its black fruit, licorice, espresso and dark cocoa character with little effort. Round, soft, lush and polished, the sweet fruits and silky textured finish hits the spot for early drinking, hedonistic pleasure. 90-92

Un nez boisé, un peu grillé, menthol, toasté également avec des notes fumées à l'aération. Bouche moyennement dense, des tanins structurants, une légère sucrosité et une finale aérienne.

Plenty of blackberry with hints of chocolate, walnuts and plums. It’s full-bodied with round, layered tannins and a delicious, savory finish. Best ever?
