Bel-Air 'Jean & Gabriel' - Lussac Saint-Emilion 2023

Château Bel-Air : a family tradition in the heart of Lussac Saint-Émilion

The history of Château Bel-Air, nestled in the heart of the Lussac Saint-Emilion appellation, dates back to the early 20th century. Today, Antoine and Guillaume, the 5th generation of the Roi Family, manage the estate. They form a complementary duo: Antoine oversees technical management, while Guillaume is responsible for the international promotion of the wines.

Since 2014, the family has collaborated with Stephane Derenoncourt and his team to enhance the quality and precision of the wines and to better express of the terroir. The vineyard is situated on a broad plateau of clay (blue clay) with areas of silica gravel. The subsoil, primarily composed of clay and enriched with iron oxide “crasse de fer”, imparts
velvety, silky and smooth qualities to the tannins.

Château Bel-Air meticulously crafts each of it wines with great care, in accordance with longstanding tradition and expertise. Each wine reflects the rich and authentic winemaking heritage of the estate.

The 2023 Vintage:

Tasting note:
The wine is almost black in color. The complex, intensely fresh bouquet opens on toasty notes, enhanced by powerful black fruit aromas. The wine is generous, full-bodied and silky on the palate, and gains structure from the extremely fine-grained Cabernet tannins, which envelop the palate and are present throughout the tasting. It evolves towards an impressively long finish. The body, structure and freshness of the wine are remarkably well-balanced. An extremely elegant wine with a great ageing potential.

Blackberries, pepper, warm stones and herbs with a touch of thyme. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, firm and precise, with a consistent thread of dark berry fruit throughout. 50% cabernet franc and 50% merlot. Better in a year or two. Drink or hold.

An even split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc raised in one-third new barrels, the 2023 Château Bel-Air Cuvée Jean & Gabriel has a ripe, focused, rather foursquare style that should round out over the course of its élevage. Red and black fruits, spicy oak, and leather are some of its nuances, and it has good mid-palate depth as well as length, yet firmer tannins.

A high proportion of Cabernet Franc, enjoyably chalky texture, a little dip through the mid palate, but unfussy and enjoyable.

The 2023 Bel-Air (Lussac-Saint-Émilion) Jean & Gabriel is bold, punchy and super-expressive. Inky dark fruit, licorice, spice, menthol, gravel and menthol are nicely amplified. Cabernet Franc plays an important role in complementing the richness of Merlot planted on clay in a relatively cool, late-ripening site. All this needs a bit more polish in the tannins. Aging is in 500-liter barrels, 30% new.

The 2023 Cuvée Jean & Gabriel from Château Bel-Air possesses a dark, somber bouquet of dark berries, spices, licorice and oak. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, it’s layered and textured with loamy soil texture that finishes long and dense.

A solid, beautiful and racy red with blackberry, crushed-stone and mineral character. Medium body. Juicy finish.
