Beaumont - Haut-Médoc 2021

The estate

If the history of the estate dates back to the 18th century, the vineyard of Beaumont was born officially in 1824. From 1830 to 1847 the house of Beaumont belonged to the Marquis d’Aligre, one of the wealthiest men in France, who tripled the surface of the vineyard. In 1849 the estate passed into the hands of the Bonnin brothers, who built Château Beaumont in 1854 in a Renaissance style.

After a succession of owners who have each worked to raise the wines of Château Beaumont to the top tier of the Médoc Crus Bourgeois, Château Beaumont started on its 12th life in 1986 with the arrival of the GMF group, which joined with Japanese group Suntory to create the company Grands Millésimes de France, also owner of Château Beychevelle.

Located on the left bank of the Gironde, between the communes of Margaux and Saint-Julien, Château Beaumont draws its finesse and its delicacy from the deep gravels of the best soils of the Haut-Médoc. The constant quality of the wine was once again recognized in 2020, when the estate kept its status of "Cru Bourgeois Supérieur" in the new classification.

The vintage

The specificities of each vintage make Bordeaux a unique place that requires experience and adaptation every year. 2021, by its climatic singularity, is no exception to this rule. This year, even if the Merlot grapes were affected by spring frost, the sunshine - albeit late - allowed the grapes to reach optimal phenolic maturity. If these climatic conditions had an impact on the yields, they give the wine particular nuances.

Tasting notes

This is an atypical blend for Chateau Beaumont 2021, which brings a nice freshness, fruit and silky tannins to the wine. The Merlots have very nice ripe fruit, the Cabernet Sauvignons are powerful with fine tannins

A rock solid Haut-Médoc, the 2021 Château Beaumont gives up plenty of ripe red and black fruits, a kiss of meatiness in its dried herb and spicy aromatics, medium-bodied richness, and a balanced, well-made style on the palate.

The 2021 Beaumont is a beautiful, expressive Haut-Médoc to drink now and over the next decade or so. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and cedar open first. Aromatic and medium in body, with impeccable balance, Beaumont is very nicely done. Pretty floral overtones lift the finish.

The 2021 Beaumont offers up aromas of minty berries and sweaty saddle leather, followed by a medium-bodied, soft and somewhat feral palate. Hippophiles may find more to admire than I did.

Chopped herbs, currants, blackberries and mushrooms on the nose. It’s juicy and fresh with a medium body and lightly grainy tannins. Drink in 2024.

This is a nice wine that just about manages to retain balance and fruit direction. It is a little lighter than I would ideally like, but I imagine that this will not trouble drinkers who will no doubt attack it early in life and enjoy the freshness and purity. 16

Un grand candidat pour le meilleur rapport qualité-prix du Médoc, dans un esprit proche des bons saint-julien, comme sa situation le permet. Tendre, raffiné, assez long, avec un grain de tannin séducteur.

The 2021 Beaumont is much leaner on the nose compared directly with the 2020, though it is well defined, slightly herbaceous and fresh in style. The midweight palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins on the entry and a grainy texture. It attenuates slightly toward the cedary finish. Give this 2–3 years in bottle to see if it fills out.

Domamage.

Offering up aromas of sweet berries, spices and loamy soil, the 2021 Beaumont is medium-bodied, lively and nicely balanced, concluding with a discreetly minty finish. The blend is dominated by an unusually high 65% of Cabernet Sauvignon.
