Aussières - Corbières 2019

Château d'Aussières, a wine that tells the story of a singular place.

Château d'Aussières, owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, is nestled in the rugged hills just behind the Mediterranean coastline of Narbonne, in the South of France. The grapes for Château d’Aussières are sourced from selected plots on the tops of the hills. The soil is very shallow, consisting of sandstone with very little clay, and water is scarce. As a result, the yields are very low. The blend consists mainly of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with small quantities of Grenache and Carignan. The Mourvèdre vines have been producing grapes of outstanding quality for the past few years, as they reach maturity.

The 2019 vintage

Weather conditions

In the Languedoc region, after a mild winter and cool spring, temperatures climbed to reach a region-wide heat peak at the end of June, followed by a hot summer. In Aussières, the drought and heatwave were once again tempered by our best friend, the wind, particularly the south-easterly "le marin", which provided the humidity needed for optimal plant development. Finally, rain at the very beginning of September enabled the 2019 vintage to reach the expected levels of ripeness.
Carignan, Mourvèdre and Grenache benefited the most from this surprisingly fresh and intense vintage.

Tasting notes

The 2019 vintage has a ruby color and a nose with a complex aromatic bouquet. There are scents of ripe fruit, red fruit compote and subtle notes of sweet spices, garrigue, pepper and fresh vegetal. On the palate, the tannins are extremely elegant and the aromatic freshness is expressed with great purity. There are juicy fruit notes of raspberry and blackberry, as well as gourmet notes such as beggar's wort with roasted almonds. Scents of garrigue underline the palate of this wine. The saline finish lingers on mentholated notes.

The first, wider release on the Place de Bordeaux for this wine outside of DBR Lafite. Beautiful beguiling fragrance on the nose, smells floral with dried roses and herbs, fragrant, sun-kissed blackberries and cherries and a touch of smoke. Clean and clean, focussed with beautifully delineated tannins and a sense of seriousness to the frame. Crisp, straight and well defined with mouthwatering, juicy acidity balancing the tangy, spiced fruit and layers of minerality. Rich and heady, confident but so harmonious on the palate with a long, clean, crystalline finish. Refined and forward finishing with a black olive and sweet and spiced plum aspect. First year of organic conversion. A blend of 52% Syrah, 19% Mourvedre, 20% Carignan (a little bit with carbonic maceration) and 9% Grenache. 3.66pH. Yield 40hl/ha. Ageing 50% stainless steel, 50% new and one-year-old barrels.

The 2019 Chateau d'Aussieres, made from 52% Syrah, 20% Carignan, 19% Mourvedre, and 9% Grenache Noir, is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It requires a little coaxing to bring out notes of baked black plums, fruitcake, and boysenberry preserves, followed by wafts of tobacco leaf, tar, and sauteed herbs. The full-bodied palate delivers spicy black fruit preserves layers with a chewy texture and savory finish.

Plenty of graceful black and red fruits, this is an impressively balanced wine from a warm vintage. Turmeric and smoked cumin kick things off, emphasing tight tannins that will soften over the next few years, before everything softens and opens through the mid palate to show a burst of baked raspberry, incense and rosemary spices, orange peel, plenty of juice. First time for the 167ha Domaine d'Aussières on the Place (or rather not in exclusivity with DBR Lafite). Director Jean de Roquefeuille (ex Rieussec), working alongside the group winemaker Olivier Tregoat.
