Angélus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 1996

Angélus,  an emblem of excellence

Nestled less than a kilometer away from the iconic Saint-Emilion bell tower, Château Angélus occupies the highly acclaimed 'foot of the hill,' basking in the sun-drenched south-facing slopes. Here, a significant portion of the vineyards is devoted to Cabernet Franc, which imparts its unique character to the estate's signature wines year after year.

Since 1782, Château Angélus has remained under the ownership and stewardship of the de Boüard family. In 2012, a significant milestone marked the transition of power as the 8th generation, represented by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, took over the management of the estate. Infused with passion, dynamism, and unwavering determination, Stéphanie is resolute in her commitment to uphold and enhance Angélus's esteemed reputation, perpetually driven by the same exacting standards in crafting wines of unparalleled excellence.

A massive, powerful Angelus, this wine exhibits a saturated black/ruby/purple color as well as an impressively-endowed nose of dried herbs, roasted meats, new saddle leather, plum liqueur, and cassis. In the mouth, olive notes make an impression. This sweet, full-bodied, exceptionally concentrated wine is atypically backward and ferociously tannic. It was revealing more sweetness and forwardness immediately prior to bottling, but I would now recommend 7-8 years of cellaring. Anticipated Maturity: 2007-2025.

Promises more in its color and nose than it gives on the palate, but a very, very good glass of wine nonetheless. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and lots of berry and chocolate character. Just a slight lack of fruit in the center-palate keeps it from outstanding. Best after 2000.

Another superb effort from this brilliantly run estate, the 1996 Angelus exhibits a tell-tale opaque black/purple color, and thick-looking appearance that suggests a highly extracted wine made from low yields. Less boisterous than previous vintages, the 1996's aromatics consist of smoked meats, subtle herbs, toast, and gorgeously pure, thick, black fruits. In the mouth, the wine reveals superb richness, medium to full body, and a long, rich, moderately tannic finish. The high quality new oak is nicely woven into the flavors. Some vintages of Angelus have been almost too exuberant in their youthfulness, but the 1996 is a more elegant (versus the hugely extracted, heavyweight style usually found here), concentrated wine. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2018. Last tasted 11/97

Performing well in several tastings, this wine possesses a dense black/purple color, powerful aromatics of grilled meats, sweet black berry, plum, and currant fruit, full body, plenty of tannin, and muscular, chewy flavors with exceptional intensity. New oak is present, but it is less lavishly displayed than in other vintages of a similar age. This is a backward, 20-30 year wine, although it is not as ferociously tannic as one might expect given the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020.
