Angélus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2001

Angélus,  an emblem of excellence

Nestled less than a kilometer away from the iconic Saint-Emilion bell tower, Château Angélus occupies the highly acclaimed 'foot of the hill,' basking in the sun-drenched south-facing slopes. Here, a significant portion of the vineyards is devoted to Cabernet Franc, which imparts its unique character to the estate's signature wines year after year.

Since 1782, Château Angélus has remained under the ownership and stewardship of the de Boüard family. In 2012, a significant milestone marked the transition of power as the 8th generation, represented by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, took over the management of the estate. Infused with passion, dynamism, and unwavering determination, Stéphanie is resolute in her commitment to uphold and enhance Angélus's esteemed reputation, perpetually driven by the same exacting standards in crafting wines of unparalleled excellence.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2001 Angelus has a deep garnet-brick color. It leaps from the glass with bold scents of redcurrant jelly, unsmoked cigars, crushed rocks, and cumin seed, leading to a core of plum preserves and dried flowers, with a waft of cast-iron pan. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers amazing tension, with a firm frame of grainy tannins to support the intense red and black berry preserve layers, finishing on a lingering ferrous note.

A brilliant performance by Hubert de Bouard, the 2001 Angelus (6,250 cases) is a more restrained and delineated version of the 2000. It has shed much of its tannin, and seems far more evolved and open-knit than I thought prior to bottling. Its deep purple color is followed by a rich nose of creosote, charcoal, blackberries, plums, cassis, and espresso roast. Elegant, medium-bodied, and rich, with a measured ripeness and moderate structure in the pure, nicely proportioned finish, it is less massive than either the 2000 or 2003, yet is also beautifully put together. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017

Intense aromas of earth, spice and new wood with fruit. Full-bodied and chewy with plenty of fruit and vanilla. Rich and exciting. Long finish. Angélus is a consistent winner and did well here. Best after 2006. 6,665 cases made.

There are 6,250 cases of this brilliant wine that is not far off the quality of the majestic 2000. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by aromas of blackberries, cassis, smoke, espresso, and new wood. Medium-bodied, dense, ripe, and moderately structured, the 2001 displays the purity typically found in this estate's wines. While less massive and intense than such vintages as 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, and 1989, it will provide enjoyment between 2007-2018.
