Algueira, Dolio - Ribeira Sacra 2019

Dolio, the best version of Ribeira Sacra

Adega Algueira represents what love, honesty and dedication can bring to the wine industry. In 1979, Ribeira Sacra didn’t even have a name. It was the dilapidated remainings of a millenary viticulture that was neglected due to the nonsense of wars and conflicts. Resignation, ignorance and hopelessness were vanishing any memories of better times. When Fernando Algueira by chance discovered this heritage, he and his family began a willful and determined process of restoration.

First they needed love; either you love it or you hate it, either you stay or you leave. They remained at home with the goal of healing and taking care of their land with passion. Then they needed honesty. Recovery means re-cover. They felt that this process would only make sense if they stayed loyal to their ancestors bringing back to life what once was thriving. And last but not least, dedication was essential to make it happen. They are the heir of a ancient way of viticulture where no machines or mechanical help is viable. The extraordinary steepness of their land forces them to work with their hands, feet and hearts, there’s no way of taking it easy, all their dedication is needed. Today, they witness a properous land that knew how to understand itself and that provides to the world it’s best version.

The 2019 vintage

Weather conditions

The climate conditions for the 2019 vintage were quite average in the transition from spring to summer, with a good amount of rain (700 mm) and humidity and a temperature oscillating 29º/13º. The closer we got to the harvest (late august) the temperatures increased substantially, reaching 42º at the beginning of the harvest, which boosted the ripening of the fruit, providing a high level of concentration and a average alcohol percentage of 13,5% / 14%, slightly higher than a more average harvest (13,0% / 13,5%).

Tasting notes

Intense cherry color, medium layer. Ripe red fruit, nuances of black fruit with a hint of orange peel. Mineral notes combined with galician undergrowth. Wide and structured in the palate with a very atlantic freshness and mineral passage. Intense and elegant aftertaste with a great balance with the aromas.

Brand new to the Place de Bordeaux, this is a blend of mostly indigenous varieties; 66% Mencia, 20% Brancellao, 6% Sousón, 4% Caiño and 4% Garnacha Tintorera planted in 3.7 hectares on the steep hills of Doade and Abelada in Galicia. Red berry accents on the nose, white chocolate and blood orange rind. Succulent and supple, this has a lovely bounce and sense of energy and fun to it. An element of sharpness and thrill with herbal-edged strawberries, chalky tannins and minerality too - wet stone nuance giving a metallic bite and long finish of tobacco, liquorice and sour cherries. Clean and clear, pure and precise - really easy drinking with bite and tang. This will find fans. Ageing 24 months in 335l French oak barriques and 2,000l French foudre.

The 2019 Dolio is a cuvée of Mencía, Brancellao (quite a lot here), Sousón, Caíño and Garnacha Tintorera created as a blend with the help of Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza in this first vintage, but they should go much further in future years. They selected north- and west-facing vineyards to achieve more freshness in the wine, trying to reflect the huge potential of Ribeira Sacra. The full clusters were foot trodden and fermented in a troncoconic oak vat with indigenous yeasts and matured in 225-liter barrels and 2,000-liter foudres for 24 months. But the wine has no influence from the wood and is floral and perfumed. It has good grip, fine tannins, moderate ripeness and 14% alcohol, and it's very clean and balanced, with elegance and precision. The best wine from Algueira in recent times. 6,665 bottles were filled in May 2023.

Spicy, floral, fresh – gladioli and patchouli, peony – with a pleasing crushed rock minerality accompanying the figs and dried nuts. There’s a lot of tannin present and the granularity of those tannins is evident. But that gives a good impression of structure, helping to maintain the compact and yet quite fluid profile of the wine over the palate. Just a little reductive at first and a touch dry on the finish. Interesting, distinct and authentic this will find plenty of admirers.

The 2019 Dolio is the first ever vintage of this blend of 66% Mencia, 20% Brancellao, 6% Souson, 4% Caino, and 4% Garnacha Tintorera. Medium garnet-purple in color, it needs some coaxing to bring out savory/earthy notes of tobacco, black olives, tree bark, and truffles, leading to a core of baked plums and fruitcake. The medium-bodied palate is savory and bright with a lively line and soft tannins, finishing on a mineral note.

From a little-known corner of Galicia, a region of Spain better known for its white wines, this has a lightness of touch, a sense of building energy through the palate, fragrant and juicy with sun-sweetened raspberry, sage and crushed rocks. Balanced, dry but juicy, this is almost impossible to spit out while tasting, delicate yet riveting. First time on the Place from Bodega Adega Algueira, and this is one to look out for. Winemaker Fernando Gonzalez, 3.7ha estate.
