Aiguilhe - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2014

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

The custodian of some 800 years of winegrowing tradition, the talented Stephan von Neipperg manages the Bordeaux estates acquired by his fatherin 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière et La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, et le Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

Château d'Aiguilhe, on of the most beautiful vineyards in Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux

Purchased by Stephan von Neipperg in late 1998, Château d’Aiguilhe is one of the finest and most beautiful vineyards in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. Located back from the river, the château's dignified ruins bear witness to a long and turbulent history. Today, the estate covers 140 hectares, including 90 planted with vines. The vines grow exclusively on the plateau, where they benefit from south-facing sun exposure and excellent natural drainage.

The 2014 Aiguilhe has a dark core. The nose is tightly wound with blackberry cedar and graphite notes, nicely defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, easygoing blackberry and bilberry fruit. There is a little sappiness towards the finish that just tapers in slightly, but otherwise, a delightful Côtes de Castillon. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2014 d'Aiguilhe has a wonderful, quite detailed bouquet with black cherries, melted tar, minerals and a touch of sea spray. The palate is well balanced with supple red and black fruit, well-judged acidity, very feminine and lithe in the mouth with a caressing and very pure finish. This is just a sublime d'Aiguilhe that will give several years of drinking pleasure.

Fascinating aromas of dark fruit, smoke and dried flowers. The palate is full and juicy yet still delivers a solid and polished tannin structure as well as a good backbone of acidity, which adds depth and definition. Solid wine. Great value for the quality. Better in 2020.

This has an ample core of lively plum, blackberry and anise notes that is silky in feel, but has heft and persistence. The finish pulls in a singed apple wood note, but the purity of fruit wins out easily overall. Drink now through 2024. 19,200 cases made.

The 2014 d'Aiguilhe is classy, polished and refined. Bright red cherry, raspberry and floral notes are front and center. Sweet vanillin notes from the oak still need to integrate, but otherwise this is a very pretty wine. The bright acidity of the vintage gives the wine an attractive kick of energy. Drink this gracious, midweight Côtes de Castillon over the next handful of years. The blend is 80 % Merlot and 20 % Cabernet Franc. Tasted two times.

Stephan von Neipperg of Château Canon la Gaffelière was an early proponent of Castillon vineyard potential and chose this property which is on the same ridge as Saint-Emilion. Fruity and ripe, this is a generous wine. Finely structured tannins back up the black-currant fruits and give the wine a texture that bodes well for the future. Drink from 2019.

Stephan von Neipperg's 2014 d'Aiguilhe is plump, juicy and impeccably balanced. The flavors are dark and sumptuous, with plenty of red cherry, plum, spice and cedar. Polished and beautifully textured throughout, the 2014 is real stand out. Sweet floral notes add breadth to the expressive finish. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

The Château d'Aiguilhe 2014 is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc picked between 3 and 13 October, vatted for 30 days and aged in 30% new oak barrels. It has an immediately pleasurable nose that should remain intact by the time of bottling: bundles of juicy mulberry and strawberry fruit with a smear of vanilla filling in any gaps. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a touch of citric fruit lending tension, impressive depth with a nicely poised, yet elegant finish. There will be better 2014s in Bordeaux but few with the QPR of this little beauty. The only downside? Pronouncing the name when you place the order. Say "de-gwee" and you should be there however, don't blame me if a case of something completely different arrives.

Dark, sweet, dried-fruit aromas and pretty drying tannins on the end. Good intentions but slightly less oak might help showcase the fruit. Hint of green on the end. Drink 2018-2021

Same stable as Canon-la-Gaffelière. Attractive dark fruit and vanilla aromatics. Finely extracted tannins - perhaps a touch more tender this year. Fresh, chalky finish. Will age. Drink: 2019-2026 (88)

This is very long with a chalk and berry character. Wonderful depth of blackberry and plums.

Bravo! 17/20 2022 – 2037

Fresh and open, with a kiss of toasted vanilla giving way quickly to lively plum and raspberry fruit. Offers a spice-infused finish. Should be a solid value.
