Hêtre (BIO-ORGANIC) - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2022

L'Hêtre
A project from the Thienpont family (Ch. Le Pin in Pomerol and L'If in Saint-Emilion), who bought in 2016 a small property in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux: Ch. Goubeau.
Their first real vintage produced was 2016 (as 2015 was harvested and vinify by the previous owner) and they have decided then to change the name of the estate into L’Hêtre (beech tree).
The estate is a 15ha vineyard which began its organic conversion in 2009 with a first organic vintage produced in 2012. The density is rather high for the region with almost 6 000 vines per hectare, and the vineyard quite old with an average of 45 years old vines.

The Vintage
The 2022 vintage is characterized by its exceptionally dry climate throughout the entire growing season and up until the harvest. The old vines, with their deep roots in our clay-limestone soils, which form the heart of L'Hêtre, were able to maintain a balance between ripeness, concentration, and freshness.

Aromas of crème de cassis, pencil shavings and licorice introduce the 2022 L'Hêtre, with a medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated palate built around lively acids and concluding with a discreetly carnal finish. It's a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The 2022 L'Hetre is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that's from more limestone soils, with the élevage in 30% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. Gorgeous black raspberries, black truffle, tobacco, and damp earth are just some of the nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, ripe, chalky tannins, and a great finish.

The 2022 L'Hêtre comes from 28-hectares of vines with some Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon currently being planted. This has a lovely bouquet with subtle violet and estuarine scents permeating the dark berry fruit tones. It's quite mineral-driven with a hint of ceps. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. There's fine structure here with a judicious sprinkling of white pepper on the finish. This is very fine.

A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 L'Hetre is expressive, bold and punchy, all of which give it tons of charm. Crushed flowers, mint, blood orange, sage and white pepper lend notable aromatic brilliance to play off the wine's richness. More than anything else, I am impressed by the wine's energy and vibrancy. Clean mineral notes shape the taut, salivating finish.
