Acaibo - Sonoma Valley 2019

Acaibo, Californian by nature, Bordeaux by culture

Acabio was born from the union of Gonzague & Claire Lurton, owners of Châteaux Durfort-Vivens, a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in Margaux, Ferrière, a 3ème Grand Cru Classé in Margaux and Haut-Bages Libéral, a 5ème Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. In search of a new adventure together, they acquired a 10-hectare property in the heart of California in 2012. From this epic journey, Acabio was born, taking its name from the native peoples of Sonoma, meaning "Three Fish."

The vineyard of Acabio is located in Chalk Hill in Sonoma County, in the heart of the volcanic and mountainous landscapes of California. True to their values, Claire and Gonzague apply the principles of organic farming, just as they do in Bordeaux. Acabio combines the tradition of Bordeaux winemaking with the sunny and energetic character of Sonoma.

Acabio is distinguished as a refined wine, with a balance between freshness and volume in the mouth that is more reminiscent of Bordeaux standards than traditional Californian wines.

Tasting notes

« Intense aromas of ripe black cherry, graphite and blackberry interlace with a lovely violet floral note. the palate is invitating and well-balanced, exuding flavors of blueberries, cassis and boysenberry that are all beautifully interwoven with silky tannins from the french oak barrels. this wine is elegant with deep and dense aromas uplifted by delicate acidity. » Nicolas Vonderheyden, Technical Director

Richly seductive on the nose, ripe and fragrant, super expressive blackcurrant and black cherry aroams. Gorgeously plush and heady on the palate, this is full of richness and power and fleshy tannins and ripe fruit but it’s glossy and characterful and so drinkable. Really great personality to this wine. I love the detail and the finesse. A great wine that you just want more of. Definitely has the fullness and so much flavour but delivered with such balance and grace. Bravo. Owners Claire and Gonzague Lurton, director and winemaker Nicolas Vonderheyden.

Elegant and refined and a little different than previous vintage with the cedar and graphite already well-present and nicely enrobing the dark berry and more delicate stone fruits. Wild sage. A gentle touch of sweet spice too – a little more present on the palate. Lithe and crystalline, a well-defined backbone and with a lovely sheen and glossiness to the tannins. Impressive. Nicely balanced.

Deep ruby. Complex aromas of fresh forest berries, ripe cherries, a hint of violet, layered delicately with toasted vanilla and dark cocoa. An astonishing purity of flavour and aroma. The structure is precise, the tannins velvety with plenty of length. Grown on 10 hectares located at 228 meters on soils of volcanic ash and clay. Another successful vintage from Claire and Gonzague Lurton. 70% new French oak for ageing.

This is firm and structured with focus and precision. Medium- to full-bodied with ripe but fresh dark berries, cocoa and dried orange peel. Very attractive mineral undertone that gives tension on the mid-palate. Crushed stones and wet soil. Firm, tightly wound tannins. Elegance to this. 88% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot and 3% cabernet franc. Try after 2026, but already very drinkable.
