The 2023 Pichon-Longueville Baron has turned out impressively, revealing aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, violet, spices and smoldering embers, with new oak all but invisible. Medium- to full-bodied, deep and layered, it is beautifully balanced, built around a fleshy core of fruit and a concentrated mid-palate, framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a long, mineral and resonant finish. It achieves a rare synthesis of classical identity and seductive charm.

The 2023 Pichon Baron is deep garnet-purple in color. It marches out of the glass with confident notes of cassis, black plums, and cedar chest, followed by hints of crushed rocks, tilled soil, and black truffles. The medium-bodied palate reveals a quiet intensity of earth-laced black fruits, framed by firm, grainy tannins and great tension, finishing long and earthy. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, with a pH of 3.70. It was aged in oak barriques, 70% new.

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot aged 18 months in 70% new French oak, the 2023 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is another classic wine from this impeccably run estate, which I suspect is making some of its greatest wines today. Ripe currants, spicy wood, graphite, and tobacco all emerge on the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a pure, graceful mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, and outstanding length. Reminding me of the 2008, and perhaps even the 2019, it’s a very classy, aristocratic style of Pichon Baron that stands out for its balance and length. Give bottles 4-5 years and enjoy them over the following 25+ years. There are roughly 12,600 cases produced. Drink 2030-2060.

Aromatically, this is a tribute to a great Cuban cigar. From there, you find cedar, mint, currants, spice, cherries, and forest floor in the perfume. As good as the nose, the palate steals the show with its combination of lift, length, sweetness, spice, richness, and energy. There is a hint of herbs and a refreshing touch of mint in the finish that adds to its multiple layers of black, with red fruits and peppery Indian spices. This is the quintessential example of a classic, modern Bordeaux. The wine blends 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Merlot. Drink from 2030-2065.

The 2023 Pichon Baron is a gorgeous, statuesque beauty, just as it was en primeur. Soaring aromatic top notes meld into a core of dark-hued fruit, gravel and new leather. This builds beautifully with time in the glass, showing notable resonance that really explodes on the back end. More than anything else, I am impressed with the precision and vertical energy that have become such an integral part of the wines here in recent years.

The 2023 Pichon Baron has a perfumed bouquet with iris flower-infused black fruit, background scents of orange pith, cedar and blueberry. Very pure and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant tannins, crisp and quite linear, impressive mineralité with an almost understated finish if you compare it to the '22. Quintessential Pichon Baron and I would broach this before the '22.

A rich and rather flamboyant Baron with plenty of tannic structure and intensity. It's full-bodied and layered with plenty of ripe fruit, but then it tightens at the end, with flavors of black currants, bark, flowers, dark tobacco, graphite and citrus acidity. Lively at the end. 80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. Best after 2029.

The Grand Vin 2023 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron checks in as a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, raised in 70% new French oak, with the balance in once-used oak. Cassis, black raspberries, spice oak, graphite, and almost a bloody, salty, incredibly mineral character are followed by a medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, and concentrated red, with a deep purple hue, nicely integrated acidity, and beautiful yet building tannins.
