Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux

Vendu au XIXème siècle sous le nom de « Château Margaux vin de sauvignon », il existe sous la marque « Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux » depuis 1920.

Le vignoble de onze hectares est situé sur une très ancienne parcelle et se compose uniquement de sauvignon blanc. Pavillon Blanc bénéficie aujourd’hui des installations ultra-modernes du nouveau chai dessiné par Norman Foster.

La finesse, la complexité, la richesse et la longueur en bouche du Pavillon Blanc sont incomparables pour un vin issu uniquement de sauvignon. Les récents millésimes ont ouvert de nouveaux horizons dans la qualité, la capacité de garde et le style devenu plus minéral et beaucoup plus complexe.

Le millésime 2023

Après un hiver relativement doux et peu arrosé, le vignoble s'est réveillé début avril. Épargné par le gel, le printemps s'est caractérisé par des pluies peu abondantes mais fréquentes, excepté en juin où une quinzaine particulièrement pluvieuse a été observée. Ces conditions ont rendu le maintien d’un bon état sanitaire dans le vignoble relativement difficile. Cependant, grâce à l'expertise de nos équipes, nous avons assuré un feuillage sain, garantissant une maturation optimale des raisins et une belle récolte. Contrairement à 2022, cette année n'a connu qu'une seule canicule en août. Ces hautes températures ont poussé les équipes à vendanger plus tôt pour garder tout le potentiel acide, si important pour un vin blanc. L'objectif principal était de garder l’intensité et la complexité aromatique qui caractérise les vins blancs de Château Margaux.

Pavillon de Margaux Blanc 2023 est un vin aux parfums complexes, à l’entrée de bouche ronde. Les sélections parcellaires sont encore plus poussées sur le vignoble. Les raisins récoltés sur près de 10 hectares sont vinifiés en une vingtaine de lots différents. L’ensemble des essais entrepris depuis des années pour créer le second vin et son lancement en 2022 permettent au Pavillon Blanc d’être encore plus précis.

The 2023 Château Margaux Pavillon Blanc is knockout stuff and consistently checks in with the crème de la crème of dry whites from Bordeaux. All Sauvignon Blanc, it has a riveting nose of honeyed limes, grapefruit, and mint. This carries to a medium-bodied white with remarkable purity, a racy, almost bracing spine of acidity, incredible precision, and a great finish. It's going to be incredibly long-lived, and I suspect 2-4 years of bottle age will help its acidity round into form.

The 2023 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notes of fresh grapefruit, pineapple, and white peaches leading to hints of honeysuckle, orange blossom, and coriander seed with a waft of yuzu. The medium-bodied palate has vivacious citrus and tropical fruit flavors with a racy backbone and long chalky finish. This is delicious! The yield was 37 hl/ha and the pH 3.15.

White flowers, pomelo, white peach, green apples, and tangerine create the perfume. The palate continues with that theme. It takes a second before the fruits sneak up on you and starts to pop in the finish, leaving with you layers of sweet, vibrant, crisp, juicy, citrus, and green apples, with a complicating touch of chalk on the the backend. The wine is produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc.13. ABV. 3.15 pH. Harvesting took place only in the mornings, from August 23 - August 30. Drink from 2025-2038. 95 Pts.

White peach flesh on the opening gives an opulent start that quickly narrows inwards to flint and steel. An exceptional white wine, with sculpted charm, showcasing citrus, lime zest, green apple, anis and sage. Harvest August 23 to 30, yields 37hl/h compared to 15h/h in 2022.

The 2023 Pavillon Blanc is quite powerful in this vintage, marked by a combination of creamy, textured fruit, bright acids and an almost phenolic feel that adds pseudo-tannic structure. I imagine the 2023 will need a few years in bottle. Pavillon Blanc is usually more immediate and racier, but the 2023 looks like more of a long-distance runner. Lemon confit, almond and white flowers unfurl in the glass.

The 2023 Pavillon Blanc was picked from August 23 to 30 during the heat wave, so the fruit was picked only in the morning. The yield clocked in at 37hL/ha. It has a crisp nose with green apples, nettle and grass clippings, perhaps not as complex as I expected. The palate is well balanced with touches of melon and orange rind on the entry. Modest in depth and quite fresh with a touch of lemongrass, it is a fine and comparatively opulent Pavillon Blanc, even if I would not place it on the mantelpiece with the great vintages in recent years.

The 2023 Pavillon Blanc from Château Margaux, harvested during the morning hours of the August 23-30 heatwave, possesses a deep, complex bouquet of spring flowers, lemon oil, ripe orchard fruits, lemongrass and sweet gooseberries, followed by a medium to full-bodied, round and concentrated palate that's animated by lively acids, concluding with a long, taut, delicately phenolic finish. This bottling amounts to only 45% of the entire crop, the rest being relegated to a second wine.

This is quite a big Pavillon Blanc with sliced pineapple, ripe apple, lemon and stone. It's full-bodied, layered and phenolic with a ripe sense to it, but then it’s citrusy and salty. Like fresh oysters. Reminds me of vintages from the 1980s, but with more freshness and clarity. 100% sauvignon blanc.

Peach, apricot, nectarine, white chocolate, smells a little lemongrass and yoghurt on the nose, some richness on the nose. Weighty with a great texture on the palate. Seeing acidity gives the lift straight away - lemon juice, fully citrus, but so clean and so mineral too with oyster shell and salt on the undercurrent. It’s still quite lean, but graceful and very elegant and very moreish. I love the style, sharp and tangy. Fresh, orange, lemon and peach, lovely bitter elements with juiciness and some richness in terms of texture. Bright and alive. It’s very good. I like the tang on the super long finish. Well constructed. The teams picked between August 23 and 30 just in the mornings and pressed gently to preserve acidity. 3.15pH - a little higher than in 2021. 37hl/ha yield. 45% grand vin production, 50% second wine.
